I posted this in the Osteopathic forum and in the LECOM class thread without much love. If anyone has any insight into this that would be great...

Hi, I was recently accepted to LECOM-Bradenton for the class of 2011. I am really excited about it. However I have one concern and was hoping that maybe some students could clear it up a bit.

How does the rotations work the 3rd year? Do you get to stay in the area or do you go all around the state and possibly out of state? When I asked about this at the interview, I was told that they can't guarantee that I would stay in state. I have grown up in the Tampa area and would really like to stay close by. I am also looking into buying a house with my fiancé and not being able to live there for two years will kind of kill that idea. If anybody can offer and information about this that would be great. Thanks for the help!

Also what happens during the forth year? Can you stay in the area?

scpod was the only person to reply and it was helpful, however I was wondering if anyone else had any insight.

I am also holding an acceptance to LECOM-B. I asked the same question, as I have a wife and kids and bouncing around the country will be difficult. The answer is that they have a few spots in Tampa for most of the 3rd and 4th year clerkships, but a majority of them are around the lake Erie campus. They said that I would be able to spend some time of years 3 and 4 in the area, but there would be rotations where I would end up across the country for a few weeks at a time.

Hope that helps.

Chris

You have to realize that the first class is not even half done with their first year of rotations, that's why no one can give you a definitive answer. It's a new school, and as scpod said, rotations are very much in flux with new sites being added. Can you absolutely bank on being able to do all your rotations within driving distance? I would say not. Is it possible that by the time you would be doing rotations that you would be able to stay in Bradenton, at least for the majority of your rotations? I would say this seems very likely.

I know how hard it is trying to decide what school fits you best, and how hard it is to find all the info you need. Sorry I don't have a more concrete answer, but that's the nature of a new program. Good luck!

Thank you very much for both of your insight. I understand the difficulties in answering the question but I aprreciate the input.

Bad news, odds are you'll be in Pennsylvania at some point. Good news is that it might only be once or twice. I'm working on my third year rotations right now. I want to stay local, have a kid on the way so the closer the better. Unfortunately, LECOM Erie made arrangements with some hospitals in the area and said that they'll guarantee that med students will be there. So, some people have to take it on the chin and go, and since we share rotations with Erie, we have equal share in taking it for the team, so to speak. I know I will have to do at least a couple rotations in Penn, and barring a massive change in the rotation process(which probably won't happen by the time you're up for it), you'll have the same deal. Plus, throw in the low low number of sites in Florida, and it makes it tough. If you're lucky, nobody from Erie wants to come down, and most of the people in Florida want to leave. I lucked out, but even with that, it's hard. Not tryin to freak you out, but it could be a problem. On the other hand, there's not many other schools that can offer you rotations in the area, so it is still your best shot.
