Hey everyone and congrats! I just wanted to try to get to know each other before we start school. Maybe we can plan a dinner in Erie before orientation starts (I know last year's class did it and had a lot of fun).

🙂

hey...Congrats to you too...I am definitely going to LECOM this fall. Have you found a place to live yet? I am in the PBL track, which one are you in? When are you moving to Erie?

i think the dinner to before orientation is a great idea...I wanted to find a place that was pet friendly, but there was only one and I don't think it is that close to campus...trying to stay as close as possible so that it won't be a hassle when the weather gets bad...I am thinking Willow Wood...the girl who hosted me lives there and it is pretty nice

Hey all, I'll be part of LECOM erie class of 2008! I was a post bacc student this past year there, so I know quite a bit if you have any questions about anything at all, erie in general, the school, etc. Good idea, i think we should get together for dinner when orientation starts!

Hey

If ya'll let me I would be willing to give you the scoop on things(I'm class of 2007)...I already know a couple ya!

Hey, a dinner is a good idea.

Hi KylieP54,

I am moving to Erie with my family (wife and 2-year-old). So, I am looking for appartments closeset to LECOM. I guess that way I'll be able to manage my time better. Do you know anything about Erie Heights?

when were you thinking of having a dinner/get together?

Hey

I think Erie Heights are part of public housing. I live at Lakeview Townhomes and they are fantastic. The rent is 690 a month. It's great if you have a roommate and they are less than a mile from school.

Homer,

Sorry you didn't choose the right school for you...but then again LECOM might be the only school you got into. Sounds like you are the sucker for choosing the wrong school. No one is forcing you to stay at LECOM. Stop bashing LECOM and just keep your negative opinions to yourself. Some of us are very happy at the school we chose.

hey, I was thinking we could have the dinner the night before orientation starts (jluy 27th i think)- maybe at TGIFriday's or Quakerstate on Peach Street. I'm from Erie so I can let everyone know who to get everywhere. It really is a nice place even though people bash it. And you will get used to the weather- maybe even enjoy the snow. It usually does't get bad till around Thanksgiving anyways.
I'm in the lecture pathway- I was accepted into PBL but I think I will feel more comfortable in lecture- it's only 2 years anyways! Is anyone else feeling a little nervous? 🙂

hey jen,

to answer your question, i'm quite nervous. i fear anatomy and getting used to 12-18 hour work days the most. i live near the poconos in eastern pa and i'm used to getting snow, but i have a feeling i get a lot less than erie does. i just keep telling myself that same thing, that it's only two years of my life.

Hey

We went to Friday's last year and it was nice. They were able to put a few tables together for us.

THe snow wasn't that bad this year. I was really surprised since I HATE driving in the snow!

Hi Matt-g,
if you want a listing of some good apartments close to lecom, let me know. the one that doctortobee lives in are really great, there are also townhouses being built right next to the school and might be done by july. they were almost done back in april. good luck!

I'll say whatever the hell I want about LECOM, this is a board full of opinions and if you don't like mine, suck it up...

LECOM wasn't the only school I got into but I definitely didn't get into my first choice. Every school has it's good and bad and I'd rather help these kids out by preparing them (softening the blow) for the bad than sugar-coating it and hurting them.

I THINK we're getting a good education (god only knows because the match list has remained an ultra-secret) which is fine and why I'm staying put and not completely going around telling people DON'T GO. There's a LOT of behind the scenes crap that raises a lot of unanwered questions.

Like anything else there are people who do and don't like a particular school. I'm happy you're completely happy, it's just that when I'm told I'll be graduating in a combined ceremony with pharm students and there's not a damn thing anyone can do about it my feathers get ruffled (thats ONE example to prove my point)...

Seriously though, to 2008ers, congrats- This country doesn't just let any school get accredited, you've accomplished only what a very small percentage of people ever will and you're going to get a great education just keep your head down and focus on your education and ignore the hip-high BS so it doesn't bring you down and turn you into a cynic like myself...

Above all, HAVE FUN! (it is possible amongst the hard work)

As I've said when it comes to politics, ignorance is bliss...

In fact, to keep the peace and not seem like a loose cannon I welcome anyone to PM me for non-cynical advice on places to live (I actually LOVE where I am), tips on the LDP program, etc.

Also, I'm going to be a Big Brother, be sure you get in on that as incoming students (I don't remember if it was optional for students but if it is, you DEFINITELY want in on a big brother/sister)...

Good luck and whatever you do, HAVE FUN THIS SUMMER!

Hey Jen 21 great Idea..my wife and I are looking forward to moving to Erie...wer're going to Willowood for all who may need info on the location...Hey my wife and I are in for the dinner idea keep me posted...see y'all soon...

KylieP54, I would really appreciate any information you have on good apartments near campus and if you know anything about the new townhomes being built that would be geat!

BTW, I'm in ISP and I'm glad this thread has finally arrived!

has anyone else noticed that most of these "class of 2008" posts for other schools are like 8-9 pages already. let's show a little more enthusiasm in our posting!!! jk

I have also been accepted to LECOM Class of 2008. I think dinner sounds like a great idea. I would also appreciate it if some current students would post apartment info. I will be looking for a one-bedroom apartment around $500/month or less. I am not familiar with the area, so any advice would be really helpful. I look forward to meeting every one in the fall.

LakeView Townhomes at www.malenodevelopment.com

A few people live in Mill Glenn. It's run by the people who run Granada, but it is much nicer.

A know another student who lives at Winchester. I think she has a studio, but I'm not sure.

For those of you already at LECOM, do I need to decide on an apartment before I arrive in Erie, or can I arrive a week early and find a place. Are there typically vacancies or is it really worthwhile to plan ahead. One of the locations I am most interested in is Lakeview, maybe someone who lives there can help me out. Are the townhomes squeezed really close together, or is there actually some open space on the back patios? For people that have washer/dryer hookups, do you take advantage of them or haul your clothes to the laundry place? Thanks for any helpful advice.

Hey

There are about 6 units per building. There is a little divider between each deck. There's a bunch of landscaping around and we have a nice yard in front. BUT you need to call NOW and get your name on their list. Lakeview fills up very quickly. Call on Monday and talk with Anne.

We have a washer and dryer. It would save you some money if you bought one yourself, but for me it is just a hassle to move it. So my roommate and I just rent one from Maleno. It's much easier than lungging your laundry to a ghetto laundrymat. (I can't even spell that...I've never been to one!)

if I am in--Ill BUY the dinner! Been three weeks since the interview. Ill let you guys know if I am picking up the check as soon as I can.

For real! that would be cool 😀 Good luck! :luck:

sunnysocal,

You should definitely move quickly on getting an apartment. I sat on my acceptance to LECOM thinking I would be getting off the waitlist at another school, and waited until the last minute to sign a contract with Granada. Granada is horrible and makes a lot of money off students who don't get housing elsewhere. I absolutely hated it there, as do most students (there are a few exceptions). I now live in Lakeview, and couldn't be happier. As other students have previously posted, it's the way to go (though I'd recommend having a roommate unless you want to pay the full price ($690) yourself). There should be plenty of other places available now because the MSI's and MSII's are moving out of the area. I know I just gave my one month notice on Wed., so my apt. here will be up for grabs if it wasn't taken already. Lovell place is also a nice place but it's somewhat far from campus (~15 minutes).

Good luck to everyone. If you have any questions, let me know. I'll be an MSIII after June 9th, so I know the ropes around LECOM.

njdo -

I received the official word from the clinical ed office... they already consider us to be MSIII's. Congratulations! 😀

The very tired, but still studying sddoc

Just a quick correction: I live in Mill Glen and it is NOT run by the Granada camp- which is why I live there. Same buildings and location, but different management.

I have digital pics of Alpine Village, French Street, Granada, MillGlen, Royal Villa, Willow Wood & Winchester saved from last year. Just send me a PM w/your e-mail if you want them. Good luck

well it seems all the apartment questions have been answered, but when i hear something on the new ones being built, i will let u all know...i actually am one of the few exceptions of living in granada, i lucked out and got a nice apartment with new carpet and walls, on the third floor, for 350 (one bedroom). but tons of ppl have problems with the place, so if you can get in elsewhere, that'd be the way to go...and yes, i'd try and find aplace now and not a week before bc you will get stuck with a crappy place. good luck hope to see u all soon!

hey guys,
i just got my orientation schedule today. the letter that came with it says i should have gotten my health and imm. records and financial aid but i haven't. has anyone else gotten this stuff?? thanks!

I was told that my exceptance was contingent on my mcat scores -- yet to be released. While the woman on the phone told me I should be very happy about the status---she came short of telling me I was actually in. This means it could be mid june before I get the schedule. She asked me to fax her the score directly. Good sign?? Nothing like three weeks notice to turn a mans life upside down.

Just out of curiosity what is the exact date that your orientation starts?

bandit, i would think that that's good news, what she told you because they usually don't say a word and not give hints out at all! man, good luck though, i am prayin for ya...
our exact date is wednesday july 28-sunday august 1.

Congrats to all the newly accepted DO students! I received my acceptance letter 1st week in May, put the $1500 down payment shortly after, and haven't gotten any materials yet. Not sure how long it normally takes. Any insight? Let me know. Thanks!

I have a question for the current LDP students. Which books do you feel are absolutely necessary to buy and which ones did you not need? I am trying to avoid buying all the recommended books.

I sent my deposit in at the beginning of the month and I just received the orientation information today. I haven't seen the info yet, since it was sent to my parents' house. Good luck bandit!! I hope you hear something soon.

Fizix2DO, you should be getting all the info shortly, congrats on your acceptance! I just called them today and the secretary said more info is going out this week!
As far as ldp books, doctortobee can help you out on that one, she just informed me that you definitely need the OMM book, and all others were a total waste, but the anatomy atlas is wonderful! (i myself love it, i was in the post bacc at lecom and we used it). hope this helps some, i'm sure more pple who know will post! 🙂

DO NOT BUY ALL THE REQUIRED BOOKS!!!!!!!!!!!

BRS anatomy is a must...that book is a life saver...I also used Netter for lab and then used a Rohen (pictures) at home to study for the practicals. I used Moore as a reference book. I would see if you buy one on ebay.

Don't buy the histo book, micro, phys, genetics....I did buy the biochem book, but probably shouldn't have. I bought the derm book because they told us we were required to read it...Ended up with an A in derm without reading it (although there were neat pictures). Most (99.9%) of the profs give you excellent notes and their test questions come from them.

Does anyone know anything about Westin Townhomes, Pine Ridge, or Brookwood Village? These are all Palermo Realty properties and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with them. Thanks!

I agree with Doctortobee...but just one thing regarding Habif (the derm book). I used the book during the system mostly for the pictures, but it has definitely come in handy during FP, IM, and peds, when you see all different sorts of rashes come walking through the door. Most hospitals where you do your rotations will have a Habif book, but I liked having it so I could come home at the end of the day and look up the rash and not have to stay at the hospital.

I'm still mad I bought that damn genetics book... +pissed+

So does anyone here have a motorcycle license? I'm taking the basic rider course in june and after I complete it I get my license. I'm pretty excited. Just wondering!

I do! Since I was 16 I've had my license...

BE VERY SAFE! Good luck on your roadtest- I was so damn nervous I ran a red light. Thankfully I still passed and haven't ran one since lol! 🙄 😛

what kind of bikes do both of you ride (or hope to ride)?
i took the PA motorcycle safety course last summer.

I used to ride my dad's 1984 mint condition Yamaha Virago 700. It was the most fun ever to cruise around.

Since I've been accepted to medical school I've kind of sworn off motorcycles mainly because people have just become too reckless and careless in their cars and have too little regard for riders. I worked and dreamed for so long to get into medical school and just could no stand getting this far only to have it ended by some A-hole who doesn't check their blind spot.

For you two that are new to riding always, ALWAYS be defensive and if you think someone might run a light, change a lane or pull out in front of you just give them the benefit of the doubt and be safe.

Riding is fun, I miss it a lot but some things just aren't worth it 🙁

Oh, and if you decide to take advantage of PA's no helmet law I beg of you to PLEASE fill out your organ donor section on the back of your license. Thanks! 🙂
