Isn't the point of AP classes so your life is easier in college because you have to take less classes? I figure if you spent the effort taking these classes, might as well submit those scores and have your hard work pay off. Otherwise no point in taking AP in the first place.

You will probably have to submit the scores anyway. Since Pharmcas will require you to submit anything and everything you have ever done for college credit. However, just ask to not be placed in the classes. You are smart to not jump ahead in courses. I can't imagine taking Ochem as a freshman. Good for you.

Yes, at most schools it pays off, but in this instance it means instead of taking freshman courses I can handle, I have to take several advanced courses and maintain a minimum 3.4

Albany College of Pharmacy posts a warning on College Board, in part which says..."it is not always in the student's best interest to have credit awarded, esp for science courses".

Plus, if I took took this course of action, ended up with a 3.3 GPA, I am not accepted at LECOM and also lack the freshman Chem, Calc, etc. courses needed to transfer to other colleges such as SJF who do not accept AP credit for science courses.

Thanks for your reply!

That's the problem-- two of the six prepharmacy college counselors I've spoken to insist I cannot take freshman chem, calc, etc. They say I must take the more advanced courses, some of which are not even prerequisites required by LECOM, i.e. Calc II

But then there's the other counselors, who say I have a choice. Even amongst the individual colleges, counselors in the same dept have given me different advice.

If LECOM posted this information, I could refer to the policy when speaking to the prepharmacy colleges. The only AP info LECOM has posted is that they do accept AP credits.

Has anyone from LECOM-Erie been through this?

I hate to give up on this, but may be better off applying to Albany and others where the policy is clear.

Hmmm. From what I gather LECOM said they accept AP. So then it's not a matter of what LECOM wants; it's a matter of what the other colleges want. Therefore you have to deal with the other colleges and their prepharm programs to see what they'd have you do instead of AP, and whether these other classes may hurt you in the long run. Could you maybe consider a 0-6 (if they still exist by the time you enroll), where you won't have this problem? Granted, this will make you go to school for 6 years instead of 5, but year-round pharmacy school such as LECOM might not be an advantage nowadays because you don't have much time to intern.

Butler University in Indiana is basically a 0-6 program. You are admitted as a pre-pharm and as long as you maintain minimum requirements you are accepted into their pharmacy school. Also St. Louis college of Pharmacy is a 0-6 program. I would encourage you to go to a 0-6 school. It's nice to have the piece of mind that you are working toward a goal as a pre-pharm student with the added bonus that you will be continuing on to the professional part of the program. Believe me, that one extra year will not make a difference, and as a previous poster mentioned, it would be good to use the summers to gain experience in pharmacy. Get a tech job!

Yes, thanks, that's a good idea to explore.

The prepharmacy college counselors agree that all policies are set by LECOM, not them. They just don't agree with what the policy is regarding my dilemma.
I have contacted LECOM more than once, and again, get different advice each time.
Seeing a LECOM policy online regarding not using AP credits could clear it all up...

Thanks for your help!
