I have another question for you LECOM-Erie folks.

My car is terrible in winter weather. I mean a real menace. I did a 180 in the mall parking lot with it last year. Once it got stuck over a sheet of flat ice at Red Lobster and I had to use salt for the lobster tank to melt it and have people push my car. 😱

Thus: 😎 If I move up to Erie I will need to buy a new one.

How much snow and bad weather do you all get? 😕 I don't know how seriously winter-proof this car should be.

They usually get 100-130 inches of snow every year. This usually comes in 1-2" snowfalls a few times a week between December and March. There are usually just a couple of major snowfalls each year. The closer you live to the lake, the less snow you get. (But, the more crime there is.) Try to live south of 26th Street, and you will do ok re: crime. The school is on about the 5500 block. Never live south of I-90 if you don't like A LOT of snow! That's where it all goes. Good luck... Boy am I glad to be done with that and back in South Dakota! 😉

Wow that's FANTASTIC information to know about the crime. Does admissions help out with housing once you decide to move? I want to live someplace safe, that's first priority. Then snow avoidance would be good.

Are they good at clearing the roads when there is snow? I guess if they do that it would be less of a problem, black ice aside (I'm used to NJ with maybe a foot per year total...lots of ice though).

Is there any particular area where a lot of students live, or is it scattered? I think my deposit is due in a little less than a month, so I was planning on talking to admissions and seeing if they'd be able help at all with housing...I'm not familiar with the area at all!

When I say crime, we're not talking inner city Chicago or LA. That being said, living in downtown Erie is not the best idea. There are some new apts by the school (owned by the school), but I'm not sure what they cost. There are also some apts by the mall that are very reasonably priced. One of my friends lived close to the Catholic College on the east side, and they allow big dogs. I think she liked where she lived.

I'm not sure how much help the school will be regarding living arrangements, but other students will have some good ideas for you.

Road crews in PA are generally pretty good. I never missed school secondary to the weather, but then again, I was PBL. (ie: not there very often!)

Good luck!

I live clear over on the east side in Belle Village. The apartments are really nice and reasonably priced (and they allow pets!). It usually takes me about 15-20 minutes to drive to school regardless of weather. I think they do a great job clearing the roads, other people say not so much - depends on where your from and what you're used to, I guess. I take the major roads to school (Pine to 38th to Peach to Grandview), all of which are usually plowed and salted. So don't worry about getting a different car, you'll be fine!

You'll get a packet from the school with a bunch of housing info in it. However, it really doesn't help all that much with choosing a place, as it is just a bunch of flyers from local apartment complexes. I used a website: http://www.rentalguideerie.com to search out some places. Like I said in my last post - I live way out east. There are two or three of us that live in these apartments, then there's Brookwood that's right next door that houses some more. I think the majority of students live near the school - Scenery Hills has a ton, Laurel Ridge, and Lakeview. Lakeview was my favorite place of the bunch, but they don't allow pets, so it got the ax. If you have any questions about housing, areas, etc. I'd be more than happy to help. Just shoot me a PM!

Thank you very much, I may very well end up PMing you in a few weeks after I decide.

15-20 min is fine with me, that's my commute now to undergrad!

one thing I find that helps when living in an area that gets a lot of snow, if your'e worried about it, try to live on a main road. I know it's annoying trying to pull out sometimes (I have to back out onto a pretty main road, it's no fun), however in the winter, you're going to be one of the first roads plowed... I find that helps too.

Yeah, that's a good idea. I'm not really worried about the snow, I can handle that (drive to Quebec every winter).

I'm mainly wondering what car would be best up there. If I have to get a new one, might as well get one that works with the weather well.

regarding housing: is it hard to find a place that doesn't require a one year lease?

I made a thread about housing at LECOM the other day. If you look down and find it there's a link to a site with apartments in Erie. You can specify lease length and stuff in your search.

I lived in Lakeview Townhomes which are about 3 minutes from school. www.malenodevelopment.com

I am from ohio and think that Erie is HORRIBLE about plowing their streets. My 2nd year we had 2 feet of snow overnight. I drive an SUV and still have trouble. BUT you can always be sure that LECOM parking lots are perfectly maintained.

I'm a lakeview gal too, and I love it, its right down the street from the school and they have garages (which you can't beat with the snow).

I personally went and got a new car prior to school starting (when I still had income and therefore better credit) so that I could navigate the snow better (got a Honda CRV) and so that I wouldn't have to worry about my car breaking when I was poor in medical school. Just do a budget once they tell you how much you'll get in loans and figure out if you can afford a car payment.

Any questions about LECOM or Erie, just PM me.
