One of the schools I am applying for 2015 is LECOM. I noticed they do group and closed file interviews. I'm worried about especially the group interview thing. Multiple candidates with interviewees? I'm afraid it will prevent the admissions committee from getting to know each candidate as much as possible. Thoughts?

It's the same process for every applicant and it is out of your control. The admission decision is based on much more than just your interview. Do your best and it will all work out. With that said, it is wayyy too early to be worrying about something as small as this. Good luck.

I interviewed at LECOM and felt the same way. I was only asked two questions (tell us about yourself and what's your greatest achievement). I felt as though I had good answers, and even received a few compliments from fellow interviewers. I had slightly above average stats, but was promptly rejected. Another interviewer I know was rejected who I thought was very impressive so I am not really sure what they are looking for.

I interviewed at LECOM and was also nervous about the group setting but in the end its fairly simple and comfortable. I cant recall if I had one or two questions but you get a chance to answer or comment of other applicants' questions as well, so you get plenty of spotlight. The big issue with a group interview is that they see how you work in a group. You don't want to sound too offensive and at the same time you still want to be a part of the group. Try leading a conversation, without appearing too obvious. I really enjoyed it and felt in full control without any issues, with an acceptance in the end.

All members of each group are on equal standing with regard to the group discussion. I think it is debatable whether one group compared to another is on equal standing though.

I think the interview will largely depend on the group that you are randomly placed into. Some groups are full of gunner type applicants and you may have difficulty expressing yourself, where as others will be more friendly. It was asked during our interview during the Q&A at the end what they were looking for in the interview. They said that without giving out too much information they are trying to see how we interact within the group. From my perspective the questions they ask individually are done to loosen people up for the discussion topics. From my searching prior to interviewing there this cycle make sure that you are engaged in what others say and interact with them in a positive manner...oh and don't stare out the window...they hate that. One piece of advice is to apply on day one. Make sure you have all your stuff together like LOR before the cycle opens. Good luck.

I had a great experience with the LECOM group interview style. Each one of my fellow interviewees was pleasant and made an effort to allow each other to speak. We each took turns giving answers to each question and in the end I think all members of my group were admitted. We were interviewed very early in the cycle.
I absolutely loved the school. I love the PBL style learning and the tuition cannot be beat. I feel the faculty are supportive and interested in the success of the students. I was incredibly impressed.
In the end I chose another school - for personal reasons - but LECOM is an amazing place and should be given strong consideration despite any reservations with the interview.

I, too, like MedSchoolMama had a wonderful experience with my LECOM interview. I had a great group of applicants and my faclty were fairly laid back. They asked good questions that provoked teamwork and conversation. Whether you like the interview process or not, you have to understand that it makes sense given LECOM-B's curriculum. They have to see how you work and interact in a group setting because that's how you'll spend your classes for the next two years.

Also, like Med mentioned, I got a great feel from the school and the faculty. Combined with PBL, the tuition, and the fact that it's only about 85 miles from my house put it at the top of my list. I put down my deposit a few weeks ago and cannot wait for next Fall. 🙂
