So I'm pretty much done with LECOM's application but there's one part that I have no clue what to do. LECOM is one of the schools that require a letter from a DO, and on the application there's a part where you have to list the names of the people writing letters for you. I've been unsuccessful in trying to find a DO to shadow. They've all said no. For some, it is the receptionists who tell me that the DO doesn't allow students to shadow because it makes the patients feel weird. It has been very discouraging. Anyway, I want to get my secondaries in ASAP, but I don't currently know where I can find a DO who will let me shadow and write a letter. But I do already have a letter from a general practice MD who I've helped for two summers. Anyone know what should I put on the LECOM app?

Thanks

I'm not exactly sure how strict LECOM is regarding the LORs, but knowing LECOM, they will want a DO's letter(don't quote me on that). I'm assuming you called the school and asked about it...?? If you haven't, you should. Just explain your situation- it's the best you can do.
I know how getting a letter from a DO can be frustrating. I had 8 DOs in my city, I called all 8 and only 1 returned my call. I really lucked out. You can't or at least shouldn't be expected to travel long distances or harass these physicians just to get some dumb LOR that the ADCOMS may or may not read. My 2 cents. 😀

I wish you the best and keep us informed,

I was in your shoes earlier, but was able to solve it. Go to the AACOM web site. Look up your state's officers and contact the one in your district. That is what I did and told them I needed someone to shadow but wasn't having any luck. Here is the email response I got back from the DO.....

"Amy, You may come to this office for an interview. The shadowing is not a requirement.
Sincerely, Stephen Blood, DO"

I met with him for a 30 minute interview, previously sent him my personal statement and a few of the secondary essays I had answered. I gave him the LOR form my undergrad school uses and an envelope pre-stamped for him to send it. He and I talked about my strenghths, weaknesses, goals, school choices,etc.... I was told at my interview that he had a very positive interview with me and highly recommended me.

I would try and find a DO to interview you rather than shadow. Hope your successful in handling this requirement. Good luck.

Thanks for all of the tips--it's really encouraging. I did talk to the admissions office at LECOM and they told me I didn't have to worry about listing who my DO letter is coming from and that I could just send in my application. BUT, they did say that I would still have to get a letter from a DO because it is a requirement. So I think I will take Amy B's advice and go to the AACOM website and hopefully I can find someone who will help me out.
