Can someone from LECOM-SH please provide some detail on their rotations? I know that there has been some confusion with the rotations, and that UPMC and LECOM have severed ties. Being the largest hospital system in the area by far, how much will this affect LECOM students? What are the alternate sites for rotations? WPAHS, Excela, etc.

The LECOM-SH sites are the same as the LECOM-Erie sites. As far as I have been told both campuses get put in the same pool for rotations. From what I've heard there were never a ton of UPMC spots except at Hamot, McKeesport, and maybe Mercy. That said, it sucks a lot for the people from Pittsburgh who wanted to do some UPMC rotations. Beyond that, I doubt it will affect students that much. UPMC was never a 13, and so cores were/are still done at completely different hospitals. LECOM continues to get more spots at other hospitals (but your guess is as good as mine as to the quality of those rotations). In general though, they seem to be moving toward a system of more "13s" (single hospitals/systems where students can complete all of their core rotations). Again, I don't know if this is good or bad. I believe they have a list of rotation sites somewhere online if you want to look into it.

I will say that for those that I know who had done 2 or so rotations at UPMC, they said they were very good experiences. Plus, I can't imagine anyone would be happy to lose sites, but I doubt there will be a huge effect in the long run. We'll have to see what happens to the current second years when they start in June to know for sure if there are any major repercussions.

Thanks, hallowmann. As long as they are adding sites, particularly 13's, it's a positive thing. Unfortunately, UPMC is a big and versatile system, so wouldn't losing any connection to that for the students greatly jeopardize their chances of getting residency at UPMC? Although WPAHS is also a large system and I've heard from quite a few LECOM students who have done rotations there-I believe it is a 13-but it isn't as big as UPMC, and they have been experiencing a lot of financial turbulence in the past few years. And the hospital system in the Greensburg, where Seton Hill is (Excela) I was told doesn't offer rotations to LECOM-SH students. This, to me is bewildering, because they have two hospitals within 15 miles of Seton Hill; one is a half-mile away. I don't know if there is truth to this, because the LECOM site states that these hospitals are rotation sites; however, they still have UPMC listed too.

This is all very confusing to me, and it is quite disconcerting for anyone who wants to attend LECOM, especially Seton Hill, in the future. I hope things are a little more concrete soon. Again, thank you for the response, hallowmann. Any other advice or knowledge, please forward it on.

Umpc (Acgme) rarely takes DOs. You may been talking about umpc's aoa programs, though.

Yes, AOA. But without the ability to rotate, it will become even more difficult to get a residency with them, I assume.

There are only 4 aoa residencies in Pittsburg. 3 are family medicine. 1 is internal medicine. None are too competitive to the best of my knowledge.

Wow, didn't see these until now. Students still rotate at UPMC Horizon and UPMC Hamot. The remaining DO programs are PCOM's affiliates and so far do regularly take LECOM grads. I have no idea about how badly this will affect Shadyside, Mercy and McKeesport (only UPMC Pgh sites that really took DOs to begin with) as far as whether LECOM grads will go there. I also don't know if those sites would be absolutely opposed to taking LECOM 4th years through VSAS, but who knows.
