Here's what I know about LECOM:

1) It's in Bradenton, Fl (Lakewood Ranch area)
2) They haven't built anything yet (from what I could see visually from the road).
3) It's really expensive. 😱
4) Cost of living in the area is VERY cheap (relative to most other schools).
5) It's in a small-town with little-to-no "fun things to do" (I grew up in Bradenton so I can verify this by personal experience).
6) The orthodontist I used to work for told me that the "quality of education would not be up to par."

What am I missing here? Who is applying to LECOM, and why?

I feel like I should go here, and live with my mom to save a buck...jeesh, how boring!

Thoughts?

I applied to LECOM....it isn't my first choice but it is up there. I applied there because if I don't get into my first choice I would love to live in Florida for 4 years and bradenton/sarasota is a pretty area. There may not be a lot for you to do there according to you but Tampa isn't that far away. Also since when was a city of 50 some thousand a small-town? I live in a city of around 15,000 and still find things to do so it probably is just you that thinks there is nothing to do. I'm not too worried about it not being built yet since they still have over a year to do it. Also, the quality of the education can be a concern but I doubt it will be all that inferior.

Hoping to practice in Florida. Really like that area of Florida and I have family around and about. New school means new facilities and most likely a good curriculum (all of the other new schools in the country everyone seems to be very happy at, I don't see why this would be any different). I see the attached med school as an advantage, a bigger social and support circle is always a good thing. Also I have alot of playgrounds for my hobbies nearby... lots of racetracks and competetive karting in northern florida. Granted I won't have much time for it but it would still be fun to hit up when I have time off.

I think it will be one of the "safer" bets as far as acceptance, I like the location, I have family in the area, etc.

As far as quality of education, eh, I doubt that is a huge issue. My main concern with new schools would be more about the organizational aspects. They will be learning how to run a dental program, which could be a bit frustrating as a student.

Its a safe school at best for most people I would assume. I have heard some weird rumors about the school though from my brother about hidden cameras or something along those lines. Not sure if anyone else has. Area is not bad at all though plus I have family in Orlando. If i did not get into my top 2 I would consider it.

What is the cost of attendance?

LMAO. i think you hit it on the button when you said RUMORS.

honestly believe an institution is invading people privacy thru the use of hidden cameras?? 🙄🙄 just think about it .. hahha

 Funny that you mention Tampa...because that's where I'm going to school for my undergrad. and I'm rather bored with it (4 years is long enough!).

I would say that Bradenton IS a small town, despite it being overpopulated (with 65+ year olds, and their slow-driving). But, Lakewood ranch (where LECOM is, more specifically) is definitely more of a young-families borough, with lots of open-space and not much to do. BUT, Sarasota is only 15 minutes south, with plenty of shopping, dining and I'm sure there's some nightlife.

I guess I'm comparing LECOM to NYU with respect to their totally different lifestyles and cost of living.

I'll try to find the pictures I took of the LECOM campus back in April.

A lack of nightlife would probably be a blessing as far as staying out of trouble goes!

Can't say I'm excited about old people driving though. yech.

The old people are concentrated in the beach area (like 20 minutes west of LECOM)...but, it's the most nerve-wracking thing trying to adapt to their slow, anxious driving. Especially if you come from a city where aggressive driving is the norm.

i guess a question you should ask yourself before going to this new school is whether the town would provide enough patients?
