they say they want a DO recommendation (required). what if i just send them an MD rec instead?

Unfortunately you have to get a DO letter. You can send your MD letter as well. This is sort of a pain especially if there are no DO's in your area. I suggest you just find a DO near you, shadow them for a day or afternoon and if they're not a complete tight ass they'll write you one if you ask nicely.
