I just ran across a website called Lecturio while learning about the Michaelis-Mentin equation. Has anyone had any experience with their website or the Pre-med/MCAT course? There are a few threads on here about their USMLE course, but I couldn't find a lot of information about the MCAT course. Dr. Kevin Ahern teaches the Biochem section (which I love), but I was hoping for some honest input before I purchase a subscription.

Hello

I just wanted to say in the most nonmissionary like way that Lecturio is a really really good video lecture service. It won't replace your text book, however, it is a great supplement. let me explain why:

So I started med school in Argentina about 7 years ago while speaking very little Spanish. In addition to the difficulty of speaking very little Spanish my anatomy teacher was less than competent (the type of person who is a world-renowned anatomist but can't teach to save his life). All this equated to me having a poor anatomy basis (although I passed the anatomy course with a 95% percent grade, god knows how).

I didn't feel this lack of anatomy until I started my surgery and traumatology rotations, there I felt it a lot. Thankfully at that time, I was introduced to Lecturio. So using this video lecture service I was able to relearn the essential information that I needed to survive these two subjects and I ended up doing ok with them (which is amazing because I was convinced I was going to fail). Now, a note about this, notice that I said "the essential information", which is exactly that. Lecturio did not teach me in depth anatomy but rather gave me the most important information and the foundation to improve upon, and I am very happy with it.

Unfortunately for me, I was introduced to it late in the game so I was able to use it on some rotations which was a godsend, however, didn't get to use it to supplement the basic sciences (although I would have loved to have done that). So now I am using it to review basic science topics that were never fully understood and it works great.

So, is this going to replace your not so great professor and replace all text books forever? a definite resounding NO. this is going to give you the most essential information for your class and the USMLE test you are taking. Using these lectures along with my lecture notes gave me the introduction necessary along with the most important and fundamental information. This made the later reading of the book a much more pleasant and short. So for me, it saved me time and helped me understand better.

So will this resolve all your medical school or premedical school problems forever? No, you have to put in the work after seeing this video to consolidate the information, it's just that with these it is much easier.

Finally, to answer your question, they have videos from MCAT to STEP 1 and 2. I have not seen them all but the ones I have seen were always clear and concise (what seemed to always be missing from my lecture professors).

So here you have it, my honest input. Is this better than other video lecture services? I have no clue, this is the only one I use. Did this help me tremendously and do I think that they have great and concise lectures? Absolutely. So to wrap this up, try them out and see how it works for you.

Best of luck buddy

I used it and I loved it. worked for me.

Good for previewing the material and review for boards but I would not recommend it to replace the school's lectures. They are not as specific as lectures.

I use lecturio and honestly I like it a lot..
The videos are clear and concise and provide just enough to understand what is important without being too heavy.. Also, the fact that their service doesn't hurt your wallet that much is nice.
I got this 25%off discount to share after I paid for my subscription: lcLZh

Hope it helps!

Its good as a broad resource, but it wount replace your lectures at all. I am in med school right now, and they often ask small little tidbits of factoids you wount find in lecturio. Ive used it although it is decent, its a bit of a time hog I feel because it takes time to get through it. Questions are key in medical school and the same goes for the MCAT.

Yeah B&B is definitely better. They’ve even started making little quizzes at the end of the videos and they are hard AF even if you’re doing them right after watching the vid lol. They really make you apply the concept.

Lecturio isn’t worth it IMO, it’s not detailed enough.

Thank you so much! I was interested in a few of Kevin Ahern's videos, but a friend told me that he offered online classes for free!

Are there any videos that you would recommend for an incoming medical student (I'm still pre-med, but I want to be prepared). I usually NEVER use my textbook, because I do my best to watch videos on the material.

I have heard that term thrown around SDN a few times. What is B&B? I'm trying to start medical school with a hefty savings so I can buy any crazy material that I may need. Yes, I agree. I wanted to use their Biochemistry course, but I found AK lectures and fell in love lol.

The most important advice is about to come free of charge here.

Do not overburn yourself with thousands of resources. That is how you fail. Ive seen it happen many times. Many times youll see that many medical school curriculum do not prepare you for boards properly. You have to do it yourself. A lot of in class exams will test small details. It sucks yes but it comes with the territory. Find a balance.

I would wait until you actually start school because most of the times many organizations will get you class discounts. If you are pre-med there is no need fo this right now. By the time you get into medical school I am sure they will have the "next best thing".

Boards and Beyond is good because it uses First Aid however it will NOT cover the small details your classroom notes will have.

Again, nothing will replace your class notes. Please get used to reading, lots of med schools I feel are now giving journal articles as directed studies to read on your own, these can be 30-40 pages long asked questions based on the case findings. Sort of like a science verbal passage.

Yep, find the 2-3 that really jive with your learning style and stick to those. As to the professor minutia that’s why I am really starting to be of the opinion that every schools needs to switch and simply do the NBME subject exams.

Thats going to be very hard to do I think, part of the reason is, many med school have PhD's teaching. No disrespect but they all want you to "learn" what they "feel" is important in terms of details. Fine I get the red current jelly sputum for Kleibseilla is important but other stuff, thats going to be hard to standardize unless they start having more clinicians teaching. Just my 2 cents.

Not if the mandate comes from the accrediting organizations... I also feel the pre-clinical curriculum should be mostly standardized across the country.

And don’t tell me it’s too hard to do when there are lots of schools that do it.

A lot of schools do that, but may dont. And in terms of the premed curriculum, its sort of hard when they introduce changes like the new mcat.

I think as we speak there are a lot of changes being done, and it wount be till many years down the road when things settle down after 2020 (which is the goal to filter out applicants and candidates, especially for DO schools). But only then after many years when the dust settles will you have some level of standardization. Right now there are too many moving parts. This is why Im a big advocate of doing board questions after one semester of med school, to give you the best chance to bring you up to that level.

I’m going to preface everything I say with the following:
1. I don’t burnout
2. I had the funds
3. This is my learning style and it has helped me do very well.

Lecturio is awesome for one thing and one thing only. Previewing course material. If you run through everything in Lecturio you won’t leave a school lecture overwhelmed but leaving with a 2nd or 3rd pass and extra material that wasn’t covered in Lecturio.

Boards and Beyond is a resource I’m looking at but honestly it’s really not much better than Lecturio. That is my opinion.

I use textbook resources as a way of clarifying information and reinforcing it. The reading goes faster once you have been exposed to the information from lectures. Once again my opinion.

Try Lecturio out and see how it goes. If you burn out from doing all of Lecturio before class and don’t get much out of your actual school’s lectures you need to quit Lecturio and focus your energy on school material.

Everyone I know that bought it regrets it n~3. That’s my only experience though as I don’t have it myself.

Did they mention why they regret it? It seems quite impressive.

I used it for a bit. Its only good if your school allows your power points to be loaded on there. Otherwise many institutions dont allow their powerpoints to be used on there. That said, Ive used it when my school had it, and frankly there is a bit of a learning curve to it. I think part of the reason why people dont like it, its because they never learned how to use it.

Just curious, If someone uses Lecturio when should they buy it? From the beginning of the school or from the second year only for the Boards?

I use it religiously....love it....one of our own professors at my school teaches there, and hes one of the best professors we have...
