If you join French Foreign Legion, can you escape your student loans?

Pretty sure they don't ask too many question. Then, with your new name of Jean-Marc wanabdoc-eax and your new French citizenship, you should be set to go!

It is a paradise according to the groundbreaking journalism of Michael Moore, they even do house calls and dirty laundry for new mothers!!

Before you sign up and romanticize it, you do realize that they are treated like cannon fodder by the French government, right?

Oh, also, you can't get citizenship without doing so under your real name, so you're back in the red with the student loans again.

Points for thinking outside the box, though...

ohh, it sounds like I'm not the first person to think about this 😉...jk

However, even if you do get citizenship under your real name, does that mean they care about your student loans from the US? Espcially if you are no longer an american citizen?

Financial aid?!

I guess loan repayment evasion is sorta fin aid topic. Somehow I doubt the op is that serious with his inquiry, though. If you do do it, just know that the IRS will hate you and garnish any wages you earn in the US and your credit here will suck, so you best never come back. 😱 I have no clue if the trainwreck your credit will be here would follow you to another country.

I wasn't serious in that I don't seriously consider this as an option, but I am genuinely interested if it is possible...

If you don't plan on returning to the US and work as a physician, yes.

The thing with the 'declared identity' is just good for a year. If you want to get french citizenship or rise in the ranks you have to return to your original name.

There are probably better ways to deal with med school debt than joining the surrender monkeys.

than joining the surrender monkeys.

Actually, the legion itself is not known for surrendering. In Mexico in 1863 a troop of 65 legionaires was faced with a 2000 strong mexican army formation. They fought until they where down to a total of 2 men.....

Nowadays the legion is more of a cleanup force for the french goverment. Every time you hear about some african country in turmoil, there are typically a couple of legionaires in the country to extricate french and other foreign nationals.
