I have a question about program accreditation. From reading Iserson's I see that the length of time between ACGME reviews can be an important indicator of how strong/healthy a program is. What is the average length of time between reviews for psychiatry? Should one be concerned if a program is being re-reviewed after just 3 years?

On a similar note, I see that Institute of Living has only just recently re-started it's residency program. Certainly, it's a venerable institution, but should an applicant be concerned about the program's stability?

Thanks!

This is what I learned from interviewing at the IOL a few years ago...IOL as a training site has been around for many years. It was originally a free standing psychiatric hospital and residency program. I'm not sure when the residency program started, but the hospital itself has been around since 1890? At one point, it merged with UConn and it continued as a training site for UConn residents. However, for several reasons, including philosophical differences, IOL broke off from UConn to be its own program, much the way it was before the merger. If you interview there, I think it is reasonable to ask about its history and future. I can only speculate as someone who interviewed there, but I wouldn't be too concerned about the the stability of the program. Hope that helps.
