My professor that is writing me a LOR for vet school just asked me how long his LOR should be. I thought the average was one page but wasnt sure so I thought I would ask. I am also not sure if the vmcas application limits the length of the LOR's as it does with everything else on the application.

Thank you

Can anyone confirm that? I dont want him to write it then realize he wrote way too much and have to go back and do it over again.

I believe the LOR writers get that info when you submit them as writers to VMCAS. VMCAS then sends them the form to fill out. It has a bunch of questions like does this person work well with others? etc on it and a space to put in an actual letter. At least that is how it was 2 years ago when I applied.

Yeah it's definitely true that there's a character limit. I can't remember if it was 3000 or 5000 (and it could have changed).

If you're really curious to know before you send it out to your professor, you could always register yourself as a LOR writer, get the email, then delete yourself from your LOR registry (though I don't see why you can't just register your LOR writer so he/she just has all the directions spelled out). Someone confirm, but you can delete LOR writers from the registry and it won't show up anywhere right?

This is what I did to see what they had to do.

hey russellang,

I'm going to throw in my 2 cents since you wrote about applying to Aussie schools in another thread....

If you're NOT using VMCAS, there isn't really a set limit of words. One of mine was a full page, and another was about 3/4 of a page- both single spaced. I just supplied my LORs a few 'guidelines' I'd gotten directly from the school and went from there.

If you are applying to Aussie schools, I strongly suggest NOT using VMCAS.... its waaay easier, way less time consuming and you have the option to do it for free if you use an agent.

But do as you will!! Anyhoo, hope this helped some. 🙂

Seems like such common sense now. I had always wondered if there was additional questions and never thought to just the LOR stuff to my own email.... Oh well at least that burning question has been answered

FYI - just to clarify. The veterinary schools have requested an eLOR letter be limited to 3000 characters.

Thanks
