I am applying general surgery but I have a 207 step one and want to focus my fourth year aways at less competitive programs (probably community programs) that I have a shot at interviewing/matching at. What are the places you have done aways at or interviewed at that you would recommend? I live in NJ so programs in the tri-state area would be preferred but location is not a limiting factor for me--I will go anywhere. thanks!

I would focus on getting a higher step 2 score and research leading to good letters rather than aiming for a worse program. Many programs will screen USMLE based on the fact that either step 1 OR step 2 must be above a certain number.
