There are less than 60 interviewing spots left at Midwestern. All of the dates that are left are in March or later. They have received over 3000 applications and avg. GPA is expected to be ~3.7.

Why are so many pre-meds switching to pre-dent at the last minute? If you don't have the stats to go into medicine right away, don't just choose dentistry as your back up option. Don't even apply to dental schools if you are not sure that you want to be a dentist (you are taking up a spot for people who does want to go into dentistry). On a side note...it's actually easier to get into AZCOM than Midwestern Dental.

Also, pre-meds who can't get in to med school probably would have just as hard a time getting into dental school, especially considering they have to explain the switch and have no dental shadowing experience. And take the DAT on top of the MCAT.

lol I don't think NYU College of Dentistry received that many applicants this cycle.

How many applicants apply to NYUCD?
In 2009, NYUCD received over 4,900 applications for admission to the 4-year DDS program, and more than 700 for the international 3-year Advanced Placement program.

Applicants who cannot get into MD programs, look into DO or Caribbean programs. As for them switching over do dentistry, its a free country they can do whatever they want.

It could be because they like both but have come to the realization that being a physician comes with an extra truckload of BS to deal with.....

I don't understand why people blame those who "switched" from medicine to dentistry. What's it all about?? You will all be doctors in future anyways. Dentistry is part of medicine, you cannot switch from one to another.

Talk to pre-meds and most of them likely don't feel this way. I think it's pretty justifiable to get upset about people turning to dentistry simply because they couldn't get into a med school or they don't think they have the stats to. That said, I don't know how many pre-meds actually do this.

If ex-pre-meds think they have a better chance at dental school, fine. Let them try and get into dental school. If they do, good for them, they proved themselves worthy to the committee. If they are going into dentistry for the wrong reasons - admission committees will seed them out. But, I think, the hatred between pre-dents and pre-meds (which then goes further to dentists vs physicians) is just detrimental and useless for the well-being of other people. I hope such pattern does not spread outside of SDN too much.

I doubt that this is true. Our class has an average of 3.5 (18 DAT) and I don't expect that much change this year. Last year around this time there was already 3000 applicants, and it was rumored that the interview spots were almost filled. However I am studying tonight with two guys who both got interviews invites and acceptances long after dec. 1. I interviewed in october, but wasn't accepted until june. So still apply Midwestern has good average stats (but not unreal) and looks a lot at personality and EC's. Good luck. Midwestern is great.

It seems like Midwestern is definitely closing in the number of people they are going to interview because I surprisingly got a rejection letter from them today. Oh well, now I don't have to worry about the $388,000 they demand after four years without taking account of interest accrued during school.

Sorry to hear that you got rejected. Midwestern is pricey but where did you get $388,000 from. MWU tuition is $51,693 a year, which is pretty comparable with most private schools. There are other fees like instruments and stuff not included in this tuition but other schools have these fees too. If you get into a state school that is great but MWU is likely to be similar to most private schools considering the low cost of living in glendale arizona. Arizona is also an amazing place to live in the winter but a little hot in the summer. Anyways I hope this helps. I can see how someone might have $388,000 after four years of living and tuition if they have a family, and are renting a house, but this is not just the tuition.

I think you are accurate that 4 years of school at midwestern may be $388,000. Most of our class has taken out the maximum loans of $92,000, but I was just stressing that tuition and fees were just a part of this cost. NYU and most other schools have similar tuition and with living cost would equate to the same if not more.

tuition is like 51k or so sure, but after all the fees and such, the cost of attendence is closer to 61K. still, i think 388k is a high estimate. my max loan (and i live VERY comfortably) has been about 80K per year so far, tuition will go up, but not enough to get at 388k.

Thanks again for all the helpful advice you posted last year. It really helped me stay positive till my acceptance came in late June.

You must be running a tight budget on 80k, but I guess our whole family is living off our loans, but we will be closer to 100k a year. Life insurance is a killer for us Canadians (about 10k yearly for the 3 of us.)

You must be running a tight budget on 80k, but I guess our whole family is living off our loans, but we will be closer to 100k a year. Life insurance is a killer for us Canadians (about 10k yearly for the 3 of us.)

we're booked through february, leaving about 72 spots left to give for interviews, but spots are going to open up as people start recieving acceptances after dec 1st, so there are still plenty of spots to get.
