I was wondering where my ECs fall in terms of competitiveness. My GPA/MCAT is pretty good but I haven't had too much success this cycle, and it might be possible that less competitive ECs could be partially to blame, along with applying waaaaayyyyyyy too late.

In the summer of 2010, I traveled to Mississippi to rebuild homes destroyed by hurricane Katrina.

I started volunteering at a local hospital over the summer when I graduated HS. I worked the front desk and pre admissions screening. That first summer was almost full time volunteering. Sometimes, when I was lucky, I would get to shadow a doctor or surgeon, and even watch orthopedic surgeries. That was awesome. I continued doing this over school breaks and the next two summers, but the next two summers I showed up a little less due to an awesome and well paying 40 hr/week summer job which I have worked at for 3 straight summers. A combined total of well over 200 hours volunteering and shadowing, although I forget how the hours break down between the two.

I got into a Biochemistry research lab my junior year trying to express a protein present in HIV on the membrane of E.coli. I have a year of that under my belt but no publications... yet. But I got a great LOR from it. Well see if I publish by the end of the year.

I have gone on 2 trips, to Panama and Honduras, and I've had continued involvement with this group for almost 2 years now. I have a great LOR from a Physician who went with us on the Panama trip.

I have had that 40hr/week summer job for 3 years now and I've already been offered a raise for this summer. My boss gave me a great LOR.

I am the executive event coordinator for a comedy group that I got accepted to a few years ago. I organize the weekly meetings and other gatherings (like fundraising and video release parties) and make sure members can attend.

When I am home, I am a eucharistic minister at my church. I'm not a really religious person or anything and I don't talk about it too much, but it is something that I enjoy doing.

What do you guys think? Are they average or sub par ECs? I would appreciate any input.

Your ECs look fine. Some possibilities for your lack of success:

1. Average stats + applying late.
2. Poor articulation of your experiences/motivations in your secondaries
3. A poorly targeted school list

Things to consider if you end up reapplying.

Yeah I think that I got a little brave after I got my MCAT back. Thanks for your input I'll definitely apply early if I have to reapply

what's your GPA/MCAT? give us a full picture

everything considered, seems good enough to get in if you applied to enough schools

Your ECs are actually competitive. Maybe your school list was too top heavy or your late application meant you rushed secondaries?

Above "par" ECs that you really seem to enjoy, and that's the important part. They are/will not hold you back.
