I was let go from previous residency, and am now attempting to get a new residency-- i've been responsible and have new letters from recent experiences and have made changes for the better-- i was let go for multiple reasons, most revolving around poor preparation and medical knowledge--

my question: i've applied in psych and family medicine and would like to be considered more strongly as a candidate; what can i do to help myself with the big red flag?

That is tough. How tough depends on how questionable your credentials looked like getting into residency and how bad the paperwork looked on your departure. All of these factors will weigh heavily on both propsective training programs and state licensing boards.

A big red flag like that is hard for programs. They get judged on the successful completion and board certification pass rates of their trainees. They need to be convinced they are not being idiots by accepting someone with a proven track record of failure. You may need to contact your home medical school or a local medical school to find out if they can help you with a remediation period of some sort. I think the key is to do whatever you can to get as objective evidence as possible that you are now focused, diligent, and dependable in your education.

I am not sure if you can take an in-service exam to show knowledge base improvement?
