Hi Micah, I'm glad you're pursuing a career path in helping others and also fixing things in your life. After your GED, most pharmacy schools require pre-reqs (biology, chemistry, organic chemistry.. etc). If you cannot get into a pharmacy school right away, you can go to a other colleges (whether private, community, public) to attain these credits. Since you seem to want to spend as much time as possible with your family, you should probably check out pharmacy schools nearby you and what they want for pre-reqs. As for hours, it really depends on what kind of pharmacist you want to be. If you're a hospital pharmacist chances are your hours vary and are long. If a retail, it's probably a lot more structured schedule and a 9-5pm type (at least the pharmacies I have observed). It does take a lot of effort during school to pass your classes, and they are difficult. I spend about 6 hours a day studying out of class, and squeeze in as much time as I can in between classes. But if you're determined, you can do it. Good luck!

Gotta run to work...I will be short

Get your GED, investigate pharmacy schools local to your family, apply to a community college, apply for financial aid, plan every semester in a spreadsheet to obtain your goals, study, study, study, take the PCAT, keep up your GREAT attitude, and do not quit.

It can be done. Trust me.

One of my classmates had a similar experience (minus the son) and his story is nothing short of amazing. I have such profound respect for him to overcome so much adversity and I think a pharm school adcom would feel the same. He can look forward to a great life, financial independence and lots of professional respect - and you can too. I'm quite sure he has his GED as well. You obviously have a strong desire to better your life and that's the first step. I fail to see how any pharmacy school could disregard someone who made an incredible comeback and backs it up with the grades, the desire, and the discipline. There are goverment grants to help you pay for your undergrad and lots of loan programs for school that with a bit (ok, a lot) of sacrifice will allow you to pay for school. Take to your local college's financial aid office. Another option is joining the military for their education benefits (maybe the National Guard?). As for pharmacy school, I know the Indian Health Service has some wonderful tuition programs if you're interested in that route.

Best of luck to you.

pianopood, did u transfer to albany, or got in from highschool, caz i'm trying to get in as transfer caz i really dont wanna take the pcat

PianoPooh, ForcedEntry, SpaceCowGirl- Thanks a lot for the encouragement! I was hoping I would get some positive feed back and advice.

I have found 2 schools nearby:
Bluefield College (reqs)
University of Appalachia College of Pharmacy

Both schools are in-state.
University of Appalachia College of Pharmacy (<mouthful, just doesn't flow🙂) is new, so it is in precandidate status right now. I read that they should advance to candidate status by spring 2007 (then fully accredited hopefully). I haven't yet researched the accreditation issues though. I'm hoping everything will be ironed out by the time I'm at that level, so that it is an option. I'm kind of wondering if I should avoid new schools?

I checked collegeboard.com to find some prepharm courses and it said that Bluefield College had it, but I haven't found any information on their website about it. I'm currently searching around to find out what degrees are acceptable, desirable, give the most preparation, and if there is a school around here that offers it.

I haven't had much time to research these things the past couple of days(until Friday I'm mega-busy🙁), so any suggestions or info is appreciated.

Thanks everyone,
Micah😀
