So I got a thank you note from a PD of a program I really want to go to-I expressed my interest in them and got a nice reply telling me that I was a great fit in the program and such-and then ended with a "lets keep in touch"

Is that just a standard comment or is it positive or am I reading too much into everything?

hmm interesting-did not think of it like that! well that is no good then huh! Oh well too hard to play a guessing game-I was just curious if something stood out about the comment but seems like nothing glaring stands out so we will see.

Yeah, SDN is all about the guessing game. When I was applying to med school I spent countless hours on here analyzing the process to death. I will do the same for residency. I think it is therapeutic.

drmistga, it's true that one should not read into everything that everyone else says or does, but I think that, in your case, getting a thank-you letter from the PD telling you you're a great fit for the program and to stay in touch is a little bit more than simply being polite...it shows some degree of interest in you...to what extent you will never know unless you follow up on it...I would get in touch with the PD, thank the PD for the letter, and start from there

But the question becomes: If you already sent them a thank you letter, and then they send you a thank you for the thank you, should you be calling them to thank them for the thank you of your thank you? When does the cycle stop! I think that this is really a question for Jerry Seinfeld.

My understanding of this is that basically nothing a PD says means anything at all, unless you get it in writing that they are ranking you #1. Anything even remotely vague (impressed by your app, pleasure to have you, etc.) is meaningless, as it doesn't cost them to say this to every applicant and they want all applicants to rank them as highly as possible.

If you're ranking them #1, then say so. That may bump you up in their ROL. But I wouldn't spend too much time agonizing over this. If you already said whatever you had to say in your first letter, I wouldn't send another one unless something's changed between then and now.

Ya thanks for the input-I am not going to think about it anymore but had just recieved it so was curious-To set the scene-I had sent a letter telling him that they were ranked number 1 on my list and how I wanted to be there-in reply I got a very nice email thanking me and saying that everybody thought I would be a great fit and the PD would be honored to be my PD and ended with keep in touch.

I can see that this may go out to every applicant as like someone said it they have nothing to lose-it just makes everyone think they are important-maybe it was good news-match day will tell!
