All this talk about the mesolimbic dopamine pathway blah blah blah….

Down to brass tacks...
What sort of car should your man or woman psychiatrist ideally be seen driving?

BMW? Bit flashy but if its an Alpina I suppose that’s ok.
Saab? Hmmmm…..front wheel drive and they often share a floor plan with your bog standard Vectra and the like so they handle like buses...
Merc….nice but in Germany they use them for taxis and the finish inside is often a bit poor…although any of these in a cabriolet is just right for a girly imo 🙂
Audi Nice but again front wheel drive, engine always a bit to far forward so not well balanced…
Porshe….crisis car….

Any ideas…

Many, many variables to consider including academic vs. non-academic, "psychopharmacologist" vs. psychotherapist, and specific patient population.

That said, I've found a massively disproportianate representation of Subaru Outbacks (esp. amongst the ladies) for the residents and Volvos of various stripes for the attendings.

....

Uh, and kids vs. no kids.
Awful lot of Odysseys and Siennas in our Physician lot...😳

The single docs all seem to have Priuses right now.

The 4 door Tesla S comes out next year (i think). I will wait until 2012 though...the end of the world, I will be driving electric.

I didn't know they made a 4 door. If you lived in CO last year you could have gotten a wicked rebate ($42k) on the 2-door Tesla, as it qualifies as a "zero emissions" car. 😀

I am a car FREAK, lived in CO last year, and sort of follow Tesla and never heard about that.

I am driving a 2006 Mustang GT. I will probably keep driving it, with judicious application of pretty and go-fast parts over the years, long after I'm an attending.

However, if someone is stupid enough to marry me, I'm going for a Porsche Panamera.

my psychiatrist drives a go-kart, with a lawn-mower engine. he's a nut.

About a year or year and a half ago they were practically giving these away....great deal for someone in the market.

That was due to the whole Detroit meltdown debacle; GM was trying to unload Saabs while they could since they planned on d/c-ing the line as part of reorganizing. Spyker Cars out of the Netherlands bought Saab in Feb '10 and have some exciting plans for the brand.

I'm getting a new car before starting medical school, and I'm trying to decide between Subarus. Seriously, the Outback and Forester, although not as cool as a hybrid, are just ridiculously good deals for the safety (especially for winter driving), reliability and other features for the cost. I'm not surprised they are common among residents in general at all.

It depends on your state of mind...I mean what state you're in. In Texas, it's

Forget what the license tag says...

The most amount of car for the money I've ever seen is the VW CC. My parents paid 25ish for theirs, comfortably loaded. The car is very refined, very safe, and gets decent gas mileage. Also, it's a sedan that does not look boring.

Good advice from S*it my dad says:

"Don't ask for my opinion then. I said congrats on the car, just saying nobody's panties are getting wet from a f**king Honda Accord."
