any value in a strong letter of rec from a now "graduated" resident who was in a program when you were an intern- or does a letter of rec really always need to be from faculty- program director, chair etc. Obviously probably not as strong- but valuable?

No value. Sorry. The perception is that the letter won't be completely honest (in that it will make an applicant look better than they are), and that the resident doesn't have enough circumspection, and the resident has no standing (yet) in the field.

your better off sending a square of toilet paper to the program... its softer.

letter from senior resident within the institution who are now attendings??-I agree prob not great- but toilet paper? cmon' are you a comedian in your down time? I don't know where you did your internship- where I came from- BAD evaluations from senior residents were cause to be having a not so fun chat with the PD- and in one case- oe intern found himself repeating the year based on negative feedback from senior resident. Having stated that- my visceral reaction was as yours prob not great.

As long as he signs the paper as an attending... the letter is okay.

If he mentions that he was a resident when he worked with you... then the letter becomes toilet paper.

Letters of recommendations are just like references in corporate america... it's about how important the letter writer/referer is to the program/job you are applying to.

Think about what your competition has provided as their letters... Attendings...assistant professors...associate professors...full professors... program directors... chairmen.....

Yes - it's worthless. While you probably worked most closely with the residents and they know how easy you are to work with, how motivated, interested, etc., a letter from them wouldn't mean squat. Sad but true.
