Letter of Rec from Doctor with same last name

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You might want to ask the Dr. to include in his letter that he is of no relation, if it's a fairly unusual last name, but I doubt they'd raise an eyebrow at you both being Anderson or McDonald or whatever.

If your last name is relatively common (Jones, Smith, etc.) then I doubt that would even be a consideration. If it's uncommon, you may want to make a subtle note somewhere, or have the physician mention it in his letter.

Yeah usually letter writers include disclaimers at the end of their letters such as "spector" has waived his right to see the letter etc. I would just ask him to include that you guys are of no relation at the end of his letter

If I am getting a letter of rec from a physician who has the same last name as me, but is completely unrelated will admissions still frown upon this? Also, should I mention to admissions or the physician in the letter that we are unrelated or am I over thinking this and this is a non-issue?

Unless you are applying to DO schools no one in MD admission wants your letter from a doctor you merely shadowed. For DO admission a letter from a DO you shadowed however is relevant and for that let the letter writer take care of it by listing their relationship to you. You'll be fine

so for MD schools, who should I get letter of Recommendations from? LORs from professors yes, but anything else like volunteer organizations?

some schools will allow those but most ONLY want professors. you just gotta google the school name and letter of Recommendations

i think UCSD allows up to 8

You gotta look up by school but in general here is a template

3 from professors
1 from PI(perhaps if you had extensive research experiences with 2 PI's use 2 letters here).
1 from someone you worked with or who is your supervisor where you volunteered. Someone who can also attest to your leadership experience would also be valuable(ie if you were on a board for a non profit organization having someone else on the board who can attest to your skills could be in play). You can make this 2-3 letters if you want to get to 6

Again check school requirements. There are definitely some schools that don't want you sending more than 5 or so letters.
