Hello everyone,

I'm looking into applying this summer for dental school. I am a new to this entire application process, so am not 100% certain of how it works. To my understanding, on the application online, it will ask for the email address of my professors. They will then be emailed by ADEA requesting the recommendation letter. What exactly do the professors do at this point? Can the LOR be submitted on the online application as soon as they open on June 1st (even though it will not be truly submitted till January probably)?

Also, can I submit the application without taking the DAT yet? I guess I am cramming a lot of things into the last moment (I just enrolled in a Kaplan Course that will end in early August). I was planning on applying in a year from now in order to take a year off, but Iv'e decided not to. Will my chances be severely hindered because I will be on the tail end of the applicants? I'm sure many of these questions have been asked repeatedly to death, but please bear with me. Thanks

Nate

A lot depends on 1. your GPA 2. DAT and then the rest. If your GPA is 3.65-3.8 with 20+ DAT you will be able to get into some schools applying late-Now it may not be your top choice if you be late- This is also if you are not lacking in the rest of you application, meaning that you should have descent shadowing hours, good personal statement.

When are you planning to take DAT?
Kaplan course ends Aug and that is when you probably find out that you need other resources to add to your study. (KAPLAN IS NOT ENOUGH) if you are looking for 20+ ofcourse IMO.

Do not underestand your Q in the bolded above. Do you mean that your application will be completed in JAN? if so, this is veeeery late, some schools have deadline End Oct, Mid Nov, Dec..etc

Solstice, Thanks for the quick response.

I currently have a 3.51 Science GPA (would have been higher if it wasn't for my horrible freshman year..). In terms of my shadowing hours, I only have about 50 hours(not sure what defines decent). Hopefully this will be sufficient for applying a bit late? And I actually didn't know that many close in October...A friend told me that I had till Feb 2ndish, guess he was wrong. The Kaplan course will finish it early August like I said. So if all goes well, I may be able to apply late august/early september; that will not be too late right? In regards to my question, I was basically asking if I can i guess "attach" the letters of recommendation to the application as soon as it opens, and simply keep them there until I apply. If I end up having to apply again next year, will I have to get a hold of the letters again?

I realize that there is a lot that I need to know for the DAT, which is why the entire month while i'm taking the Kaplan course will be dedicated for studying for the DAT. I have nothing else planned for that time. In addition, i'm also a 3rd year undergrad right now, so most of the information is fresh in my mind. Im just completing a year of Biochem, 2 quarters of genetics, and some other upperdivs that refreshed my memory on many of the basic concepts from general bio/general chem. In terms of reading comprehension...that will be the most difficult portion for me.

Get your application in June 3rd and then submit your DAT scores after you take it in August.
The actual application takes about 6 weeks to process, so while your app is being processed you can study for the DAT and then submit the scores. That way you will still be considered an early applicant. Thats what I plan on doing.

Alright, I'll do that. Also, when I submit my letter of recommendation, I see that the professor will have to mail it to AADSAS? I'm trying to make it as easy as possible for my professors. We have a service on campus that will take your letters of req and hold them for up to 5 years. They will also send them to AADSAS, but they charge.
