Hi! I recently got a letter from the Office of Recruitment and Multicultural Affairs, stating that I am within a competitive range for students who have been successful when applying (likely from Med-MAR). Is it worth applying even though my stats are below the school's average GPA/MCAT score? Looking for input on how much they matter vs how much they want my money.

Double posts are not cool. Go close your other thread.

Apply to the school. You have nothing to lose...except the money you'll spend the application fees. They definitely want your money. But if they've emailed you, maybe they do actually want you as a student too.

that is true, just weighing my options.

Personally, I think the cost of one more application is fairly insignificant in the grand scheme of things. If it seems like a school you could see yourself at, I'd say go for it.

Another way to gauge that schools intent would be to see if any other schools also email you and encourage you to apply. If other schools' multicultural/diversity/recruitment offices email you, then that'd be more evidence that your initial thought of "maybe the school just emailed me because I'm on the Med-MAR" is correct. I don't know how the AAMC or admissions offices use the Med-MAR.

As @Goro is getting at, it really depends how far of a reach this school is for you. If the school isn't too far above your gpa/MCAT stats (for instance if you still fall above their 10th percentile accepted data on MSAR) I'd apply. If you're talking about an elite school and you're only competitive for low-mid tier programs, I wouldn't waste the money.

Why don't you reach out to that school and figure out how welcoming they really are, or if they're just going through the motions and trying to boost minority applications to consider. Connect with their AMSA and LMSA chapters to students. Did they get this correspondence when they applied?
