Letters for Transitional Year

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I"m confused - are you talking about applying this year for a TY and an Advanced Rads position to start next year?

If so, and the Sub-I is for Rads, I'd say the letter would come in handy. If its not Rads and you have other good letters, it probably doesn't matter...but TYs are pretty competitive. You don't want to match into rads and not have a PGY1 position.

Is it important to get a letter from a subinternship for purposes of getting a transitional year spot, if you're going into radiology

You need not get any extra or special LORs specifically for a transitional year. You can just use the ones you use for radiology, keeping in mind that I would recommend that your three main letters not include one from a radiologist. The exception is that if you decide to do a 4th LOR.

Depending on how confident you're feeling, you could consider writing a second personal statement for a TY. However, you may also want to apply to preliminary medicine or surgery programs, in which case anything you write should be more generic.

That might be TY program dependent. BUt I didn't submit any letters from my sub I's. I had 1 FP, 1 path and 2 derm letters, the same letters that I used for my derm application fI used for my TY app. I did change my PS a little to include things like working in board varity of fields that would help me be a better dermatolgist (eg peds, surgery/plastic, burn unit, allergy/immuno, path rotations) and working with the team stuff.
