Some of my top schools that I have applied to (I am most interested in them, they are not all top ranked schools) I haven't heard anything from and want to send a letter of interest to update them on what I've been up to and express my LOVE for them. A few questions I have are:

Who do I address the letter to? "To Whom It May Concern" or a specific dean... like the Dean of Admissions? Or to an admissions officer?

What SHOULD I say? Anything anyone knows to be a particularly good thing to include? Or anything specific NOT to include?

Any particulars on formatting or any other advice would be much appreciated!! Thanks all, in advance.

The answers to your questions are going to be somewhat subjective, so keep that in mind. I would address the letter to the admissions committee, and format it as an official letter. Include what you've been up to, and why you remain interested in the school. I wouldn't write more than two or three to-the-point paragraphs (adcoms are busy people).

Yea I would address it to the adcom as well. Mine were about 5 paragraphs long. Intro, 3 paragraphs for things I liked and why I fit well, then the last for a more personal reason (if applicable) and concluding statements.

Is this pre or post interview?

so when you say address it to the admissions committee.... do you mean like literally, "Dear Admissions Committee," or what? Thanks also!

My LOIs were addressed to the Dean or Director of Admissions. This is the basic format of my letters:

Paragraph 1 - introduce yourself (interview dates, current status), state the purpose of your letter (update, express interest), if applicable state that the school is your #1 choice.

Paragraph 2 - provide updates of awards, volunteering, research, semester grades etc...

Paragraph 3 - Tell them why you love them. Try relating your personal interests to something unique about the school. BE SPECIFIC!

Paragraph 4 - conclusion, personal reasons for attending the school, commit to matriculating if accepted (only do this for one school).
