Are we supposed to write our top choices and let them know we will be ranking them highly or is this against the match rules?

it's illegal for them to ask you where you're going to rank them. but telling them in an unsolicited fashion is OK.
 
I don't know about this letter of intent business. Don't they tell us that we cannot promise one another any kind of commitment? So, isn't this letter a violation of the match? And if you say that the letter of intent does not represent any kind of official commitment statement, then why bother sending it?

i see what you mean. i guess it's a fine line between calling the applicant the night before ROLs are submitted and trying to make a deal with them to rank each other #1 (which actually occurs quite often in derm) and sending an email to applicants saying "we plan to rank you very highly, we hope you feel the same" which occurs frequently in all specialties. did you guys look at the powerpoint presenation about the ROLs? i think their example of a letter intent from a PD was considered legal. so it should be the same vice versa.
