Hi,
I am new to this board...have been a silent observer for a little while...great discussions! anyway, I am doing an away rotation at the end of this month and one in oct/nov. Will it be too late then to get letters of recommendations from rad oncs at those programs?

Also, my mentor has set up these two away rotation because she knows the chair at the programs...but she wrote to the chair and he basically said that he could not write a letter of rec but other docs could...my question...can a physician from a program write you a letter of rec for that program? even if you are there after the deadline?

I dunno...this whole process if confusing. I had a late interest, am applying this year and do not really have impressive step 1 scores...so am a little nervous about it all really
thanks for any advice

The question is, do you NEED the letters? Do you already have letters from a couple radoncs, or would you be depending on these letters to get you in? I'm a 4th year like you, so definitely no authority on this. However, my take is that you won't need letters from these two programs to have a shot at getting into their programs..they're already going to know you, I don't think a letter will add very much to your application. However, if you need the letters for OTHER programs, then honestly, it is getting to be a little late by then. You'll need to invoke some urgency in the letter writers, and probably mail the letters instead of submit them through ERAS.

I'm in a similar boat as you, a mere mortal who decided late on radonc, trying to sneak in amongst all the mudphuds. Work you a$$ off on the away rotations, express strong interest in your home program and that will likely give you at least three good shots at getting in...if not more. Best of luck!

Thanks! Good luck to you...so I have one rad onc, no program at my school and am really hoping to try to get a spot at the programs I am rotating at...

Yeah, I was definitely wondering if I needed the letters from the people at the program where I was trying to go...thanks for answering that

if you think it may be too late, and you did a great job at the rotation, you could have the attending possibly send an email or make a call for you at various programs where he may know someone...
