hi,

how is life as a pharmacy student? what do you do on an hourly basis? im asking b/c im hoping that my life wont consist of just studying the entire day. id like to have a life as well 😎. thanks!

It's not easy that's for sure, and it requires extreme dedication. I have class every day from 8:30-3:30, so in order to keep a decent workout schedule I go the gym in the morning at 5 am. Then right after class I take a one hour nap and hit the books. Around 7 I take a break and eat something, maybe visit friends or watch some tv. After that it's back to the books until time to get some sleep.

7 hours of class :scared: ?! shoot. im gonna be fat now. my health will be the first thing to go. its ironic how im pursuing a career in the healthfield though

5 hours!!! How'd you get that it's 8:30-3:30 with a one hour lunch so that's like 6 hours. I should also point out that I am in the University of Appalachia which is a 3 year school and we use the block system, so things may be different elsewhere.

Well...I am physically in classes 21hr/week including lab. Also have big tests every week or every other week and small quizzes, cases, projects, papers...You WILL have life if you can live with B or C...

I had lots more time during my 1st two years of school. Now, I get up at 5am and do school work. My class times vary. Tomorrow, I have a class at 8:00am, so I have to leave here at 6:30 because of traffic. I'll be done with campus classes at noon, then I'll drive home. Then I get to watch the lectures from Gainesville. Tonight, I'll be studying for pharmacotherapy. We have a disease state every two days. Since we already learned all the drugs last year, we have to apply it this year and also learn all the OTC drugs. Then after you perform in class, you have to peer review all of your classmates who also got called on that day. When we write SOAP notes, we have to peer review everyone on our team. These things are required busy work and you will receive a zero for your grade if you don't do them.

On top of that, each week, I have 8-9 quizzes, assignments and exams. I spend a lot of time studying. I average 6 hours of sleep per night and have stopped all attempts at exercise. There is no time. Year 3 sucks. If it was like this my first year, I probably would have dropped out.

i don't care if the classes everyday is 4-6 hrs as long as it keeps my attention. Also i am choosing this major because i like to learn about drugs and treatment of diseases(Research Pharmacy). So if you want to do something in life I mean make money (the first thing) and serve our community then be ready for some real stuff. Beleive me once you go to the Pharmacy college and you see how hard people study then it will definitely give you the motivation and the energy which, i think, making you scared about the work in college. GO with the flow man! Thats just my thinking.
Peace. Good luck for the future!!!!

thanks for all your help.

im not that worried about the workload - i actually come from a well-known university, so i know what it means to work hard. my purpose in asking my question was simply out of curiosity - so please dont become self-righteous on me and begin teaching me work habits (i realize i sound like a slacker in my first post)

fenil, im not in it for the money  . if it were so, i would have gone to business school. i can think too.

again, thanks for your comments. i really appreciate them 😀

with all the constant barrage of information, do you retain it all?

I really don't care how much time I'll be spending studying......I can be in college almost all day...

What I care the most is that I get in to the pharmacy school...I really want to become a pharmacist....... I know I'll dedicate most of my time studying......Can't wait to get my hands on my first "pharmacy text book" 😀 😛

Ditto! If I get in I will be so grateful that I'll sleep with my books covering me like a blanket  I will gladly make pharmacy school my life for 4 years to make it out successfully! 😛

I just can't wait until the days when I am only going to school and not working at all. I have already planned on doing school only when I get in next year. I was told at UIC that classes were from 9am to 5pm everyday of the work week. Oi.

Chris

Thats only P2 year. Right now, my classes are as follows:

M: 830am - 1220pm
T: 830am - 1220pm
W: 830am - 330pm
Th: 830am - 430pm (right now, i get out at 230pm until we take our calculations exam on Oct 18th)
F: 1130am - 1220pm

Its not that bad, but its an adjustment for everyone. Im still trying to catch up, but hanging in there!

Yeah- I was not that worried about the work load either-- I have a BS and a MS in a science field- ha ha ha. I have class every day from 12/1pm to 5pm. Next week we start service learing for 3.5 hours once a week in the a.m. I work as a pharm intern at CVS for 4-7hours a week. I have found that I study 3-6 hours a day-I get up early and study and come home and study. I feel like there is not enough time to get all the studying done. I try to do most of my studying during the week because I spend my weekends with my boyfriend who lives 45 min from me, but I still spend hours on the weekend studying. I spend an hour each way getting to school even though it is 25 miles from my house. The work load is crazy- it is not homework, it is studying- I have at least one test a week, some weeks three exams. This week it is A&P monday, biochem on fri- we had calculations this past thur- I have not even cracked a book yet for a&p. If you think you will be ok with the workload- you are in for a surprise. I got a 98 on the PCAT, graduated with honors, and I went to a reputable school too - and I am overwhelmed- and I can say most people at my school feel this way. Good Luck! 🙂

Is it possible to try to get into pharmacy school when the person doesn't give a hoot about pharmacy? Would it be fair for the others if someone like that were to apply?
I was just asking since I'm kind of feeling a bit slow in entering "The World of Pharmacy" mind-set thing. ^^; Was pharmacy something some of you guys were really interested in before being an undergrad? Well, that would be obvious to some, but sometimes, ya really never know.

I'm so darn curious. 😀
