We talk a lot about school, research, GRE's, and etc....so I figured I'd start a thread to talk about things we enjoy OUTSIDE of school. I know I know....school = life, but in those precious spare moments, people sometimes enjoy things that aren't related to psychology. I always find it interesting to hear what everyone is into.

I altered the categories from something else, feel free to use it, not, add to it, etc. This is suppose to be fun, so don't think to hard about it.

When I'm not doing school stuff I enjoy....:

Golfing

(not me.....though he seems really into it!)

Hobbies: Golf, Foodie, Traveler, pianist (20+ years, though I'm not serious anymore).

Weird Fact About Yourself: I loved lima beans as a kid, now I hate them.

How did you find SDN?: I found SDN by googling something about psych. I got sucked in, became an advisor, then mod, now a lead mod...go figure.

SDN claim to fame: I'm probably the nicest guy you'll ever me, except in the morning....I'm not very pleasant in the morning.

Running (about 40 miles a week right now)

Not very well known fact(s): In what I now call "my former life" I:

Obtained a Masters Degree in Divinity (counseling emphasis) and I was going into the ministry as a pastoral counselor.
I ran for office
I owned 2 horses and lived on a 7 acre ranch in southern California.
My divorce changed all that and I joined the Army at 29.

Found SDN: Searching for info on the Army Health Professions Scholarship.

Did I mention running?

Hobbies: Painting and Etching, reading a ridiculous amount of books, traveling, and my chihuahua chloe, listening to music

Weird Fact About Yourself: I'm left handed, but I can draw/paint with one hand and write with the other simultaneously.

How did you find SDN?: I found SDN during a junior year undergrad freak out. I just read the boards for the better part of a year, until now, when I am actually applying to schools and need help/support!

Oo, can I play?

Hobbies: Anything auto-related (okay, mostly reading--love the auto industry, hate what they do to the environment), exploring Chicago, hanging out with my wife and our dog Lucie, running far fewer miles per week than 73BARMYPgsp, biking, hiking, cooking, anything musical (I played in bands steadily from 13-about 28; now I just go to the symphony from time to time).

Lucie:

Weird Fact About Yourself: I was once heckled by Bobcat Goldtwaithe, while he was performing. He called me a hippie. To this day, I have no idea why.

How did you find SDN?: After deciding to go back for psychology, my first, true academic love, I began to mass-Google the subject. I thought I was going to apply for next year, but I have learned way too much on this forum to think I could actually get in anywhere 🙂. I've gotten nothing but helpful advice and guidance from everyone here, and I look forward to participating in many more discussions!

When I'm not doing school stuff I enjoy....: I read. A lot. I'm working through the Discworld series right now. I usually have at least one research methodology book on the go (although not right now, because I'm doing some focused readings on SEM). I also play online Scrabble (at which I can say without bragging that I am really quite excellent).

Hobbies: I work out five times a week with weights and do cardio 6 days a week. I'm very happy that I have time for it. Did I mention Scrabble?

Weird Fact About Yourself: I can't get a date to save my life. Maybe it has to do with the Scrabble?

How did you find SDN?: I honestly don't recall.

SDN claim to fame: I know RD in real life.

I love threads like this!

When I'm not doing school stuff I enjoy....: Reading! I had a prof who said grad school spoiled her for pleasure reading but I don't see that as even a remote possiblity. Novels are my friends. Sitting outside and enjoying my garden in almost any kind of weather (of course a lot of the time I'm doing homework, so this may not count!)

Hobbies: Cooking! Baking bread is cathartic. Reading (see above), making my garden even prettier than the season before. Hiking when I have time to do it! Crossword puzzles. I just realized that I have to think about what my hobbies are. I need a life.

Weird Fact About Yourself: I can spit a stream of water about 8 feet out.

How did you find SDN?: I went to interviews last year and someone mentioned checking an online site like this. I started googling and found SDN. I cursed for weeks that I hadn't thought to look for one sooner. It would've helped me a lot through the application process.

SDN claim to fame: I knew how RD got her screenname. Isn't it odd that two people's claim to fame involve her?

When I'm not doing school stuff I enjoy....: playing with my 9-week old kitten, making sock creatures, finding new restaurants, talking on the phone with old friends.

Hobbies: What are those? Besides the above list, I was once upon a time a musician.

Weird Fact About Yourself: You could take your pick really. I have lots of tattoos, I've been a vegetarian since I was 9 years old, I'm a witch, I love earthworms, one of my favourite cities in the world is Omaha, Nebraska.

How did you find SDN?: By googling in a moment of desperation after applying to schools.

SDN claim to fame: I know JockNerd in real life (I just thought I should corroborate his story, haha). I don't know what my claim to fame is. I've made a few people from the board sock creatures? haha.

Oh, you reminded me. I have it all the time so I don't think it's that big a deal...

Weird fact about yourself: I have a tattoo of a cross-section of a human brain as a shoulder cap on my right shoulder. It's basically anatomically correct, down to hypothalamic subdivisions. RD thinks it looks like a uterus.

I can vouch for this. My son is the proud owner of an official RD sock puppet, and he drags that sucker EVERYWHERE. M'thinks the cats sort of like it almost just as much.

Well, y'know, some people say that there are those who use their nether regions to do their thinking for them. Sooo, I suppose that your uterus could be considered a brain of sorts. 😉

LOL yes there's a whole discussion immortalized on my facebook about your uterus tattoo.

I'm so glad he still likes it!

*that* is the reason why I started this thread....truly random/interesting facts!

"Omaha, somewhere in middle America..."

I'll play too... and then I'll finish my applications. Promise.

When I'm not doing school stuff I enjoy:
I watch a lot of cartoons. (That's so unintellectual- should I be admitting that?!?) Although if research doesn't count as "school stuff" I could definitely say that. My boss actually called me a research wh*** [expletive deleted, but think Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman] because I was sneakily getting involved in so many projects. Fortunately she's an awesome boss, or I might've been offended. 😛

Hobbies: Ditto on the loving to bake, especially desserts. I'm also a gym nut... so the two actually go hand-in-hand pretty well. There's only so long my metabolism will support the amount of junk food I consume.

How did you find SDN: Obsessive googling, like so many others. (I'm actually pretty surprised I hadn't heard about this site before doing so.)

SDN claim to fame:
I don't think I have one - yet 🙂

I'm glad somebody found something to like about Omaha. I spent the longest 18 months of my life there, and if I never go back it'll be too soon! 😱

Really? I voluntarily go there whenever I can. I think it's such a cool place.

When I'm not doing school stuff I enjoy: I enjoy pushing folding on all those around me. Don't know what folding is, check this out http://icrontic.com/files/thraxfoldingflash/. If you want to join or have questions let me know!

Hobbies:
Working on computers, sleeping, eating (they are hobbies now, since they are optional), watching sports

How did you find SDN: I forget, it was actually back in 2003.

SDN claim to fame: I ran the infamous interview list last year.

When I'm not doing school stuff I enjoy: Besides my private practice, I am reading, working out, riding my road bike, visualizing myself jogging but finding myself inert in reality, loving my family, planning my snowboarding trips this season, planning my additional jaunts in the coming months, appreciating good good food and wine.

Hobbies:
Trying to find time to read good literature. This has not been easy during that past several months. Oh!...I got a boat load of movie gift certificates for my birthday. I have seen some decent films. Into the Wild is strongly recommended (a good read as well!).

How did you find SDN: Recently, during one of my panic-related episodes precipitated by thoughts of being rejected from every school I applied to. (**the image of an entire admissions committee doubled over in laughter as they review my application...pointing, laughing with tears, hands on their stomachs...that kind of humiliation.) SDN has been a wonderful blessing.

SDN claim to fame: I called someone a narcissist after they were condescending and rude to rayneedeigh. He hasn't been back since. He wasn't nice. He just needed a platform to hear himself talk and convince himself he was powerful. **chuckles.

Really? I voluntarily go there whenever I can. I think it's such a cool place.

Well, aside from the fact that my husband and I found it an unpleasant place to live, it was also the (unfriendly) people we came in contact with via the church we attended, coupled with the fact that my husband was working 7 days a week and was stressed beyond reason at the time. It was not a happy time in our lives. I'm sure that colored my already poor feeling for the city in general.

When I'm not doing school stuff I enjoy: Not doing school stuff lol. But seriously, I enjoy relaxing when I get the chance and doing things totally non-school/psych related.

Hobbies: Volleyball (even though I am crazy short), board games (Yay!), watching the discovery channel and documentaries, being a facebook and SDN junkie, singing but only when I'm alone, hanging out at my friends house and TRAVELLING (I should have been born on some remote tropical island where I lived out my days fishing, building huts and swimming in the heat - nothing would have made me happier 😀).

How did you find SDN: Obsessive web searching last year like a number of other people. I wish I found it earlier.

SDN claim to fame: Don't really have one...

I think I remember this! haha. I'm a narcissist magnet at the best of times anyway.

board games (Yay!)

Come to my University!!! A few people from my cohort and I wanna start a board game night. 😀

This looked interesting. What's involved? Is there a fact sheet or general email you can PM me?

Hobbies: Working on computers, sleeping, eating (they are hobbies now, since they are optional), watching sports

That's the truth if I ever heard it! I have never longed for the ability to go without sleep as I have since I started grad school!

Awesome! I started a 'game night' with my best friend and some of the kids from work (I'm a DA counsellor in a residential program, my friend is a parent counsellor that has a couple of the kids living with her). It's a blast!!!

I will be accepted and accept an offer from your uni just so I can continue the game night tradition!

That would be soooo much fun you have no idea!
