Of course the lifestyle is different...any of these subspecialities of peds are. Think about it logically, how many 10 year olds have a cardiologist vs. how many 70 year olds have one...you can only survive in peds cardiology if you are one of the best and work in a top hospital, again think about it, if your ten year old kid is diagnosed with some rare condition you're not taking him to the local hospital, it's gonna be hopkins/mayo/etc. Other similar speciailities such peds oncology, etc are plagued by similar problems, a majority of patients in their field are much older...to be honest you'll make more and have a more fulfilling lifestyle just staying with peds and not specializing, but to each his own

In terms of lifestyle, can any one comment on a typical day in the shoes of a adult cards fellow and/or attending? I've asked around, but people always say, well, it depends... of course it depends! But is there an "average, middle of the road" schedule that best represents a typical day of a general cards fellow/attending? Is it as bad as a general surgeon's? Thanks very much for your help.

The reason they say it depends is because for regular cardiologist how tough their schedule is, is basically up to them...some people either like the stress or want to make more money so they work 80 hours per week, others want less hours and are content with less money, so they join a group which makes this possible. In short, its up to you. Unlike surgeons who have less say in their hours, cardiologists really have the luxury of being able to say exactly how much they value their free time. If they double their hours they double their pay, and vice versa. Not true in alot of other specialities.
