Trying to decide between Cohen Children's at LIJ and Maria Fareri at NYMC. Anyone have any thoughts or advice in terms of strengths and weaknesses of these two programs? Thanks

My cousin was a resident at NYMC Peds 4-5 yrs ago and loved the program, she was very happy there. She matched into Peds EM afterwards. Not sure about the other program.

I did an away rotation at LIJ the past Sept. What impressed me the most was their teaching during morning report and noon lecture. They have similar teaching structure as NYMC where the chief runs the morning report. But for some reason, LIJ's lectures were just FILLED with good hints about what might be on the boards and what key words to look out for. Maybe it was because the chief was great this yr, either way, it impressed me. On the down side, I felt it was much more of a fellow-run residency than resident focused. There weren't much teaching on the floors during rounds and the residents worked really hard. I think the size of the program is of consideration. They have no golden weekends for the first 2 yrs and their cafeteria is atrocious. Also, their parking garage is not big enough for everyone so often if you have to go to clinic in the morning (for electives) and return to hospital in the afternoon, you end up spending 20 min just looking for parking or parking on the street. I know these things are very small stuff but it adds up. These are also things they don't talk about during the interview.

I don't know much about NYMC other than doing a second look there. From what I saw during rounds, they had pretty good teaching and the residents really help each other when there's a crisis (patient really sick). Their patient load is very high though (8-10 pt/resident) and the day I was there, they had 14 overnight admissions (granted it was Jan)!! The overnight PGY-1 was def exhausted but the senior helped write the admissions. Also to consider is that they have private physicians taking care of patients on the floor so you might have to chase down a few outside attendings for plans.
