I feel like I'm in limbo right now and am trying to think how to better my position. I was waitlisted at the one school I interviewed at (SUNY) and haven't heard back from the other schools. I'm not sure whether I should submit more applications (since I only submitted 4) or prepare for next year by maybe working as a research assistant, retaking the OAT, and/or shadowing a different optometrist.
Any suggestions?

Depending on your stats, when you submitted you applications and your EC you may not need to prepare for next year but be patient. The GPA is the most difficult to raise, depending on the number of units you have already taken. The OAT is the easiest way to boost your application by simply studying and doing better and better. If you have good stats, then make sure to practice for the interview. Hopefully you have some ECs to talk about and convince the interviewer you belong in Opt school.

if you are wait-listed at SUNY, they don't/won't tell you if you're accepted or not till sometime in April. At least that's what happened last year. So you should probably try to think of ways to improve your future interviews. Pretty hard to grab those spots for wait-listed applicants at SUNY. What are your stats?

Well, my stats are mediocre, so I'm worried about getting off the waitlist.

Gpa is low...slightly below 3.0

OAT was TS: 350, AA: 330

I do have some good ECs to help me stand out. But I think they hinted in the interview that I should shadow more optometrists to get a more accurate view of the field.

uh oh, sounds too familiar to me. :scared:

luckyfool: I think I noticed from one of your previous posts that you were a reapplicant. What things did you change the 2nd time around?

I only shadowed 1 optometrist for a year. I'm guessing I should look for others to shadow as well.

Also, I'm wondering what schools I should apply to now. I'm thinking NSU and Pennsylvania...

i work fulltime at an ophthalmology and optometry practice in new york city, and it helped alot for my application since one of the suny professors is the optometrist i work for. as for you, i think some experience with 1 optometrist is enough as long as you know what you're talking about during the interview. just be confident and assertive.
good luck.
