hai there SDN folkz, we are about to start winter session, and i have the choice of taking linear algebra in the winter session. this session last only 3 weeks. so i was wondering would this be too much for this session?

I took the class during a regular semester, but I honestly thought it was the easiest of all math major requirements... I doubt a condensed version will cause you any problems. Maybe I had an easy teacher or something, but if it'll be your only class over break, go for it. 👍

Clever you're an economics major right? I didn't know they needed to take multi-variable calc and liner algebra.

Try to investigate the professor (i.e. with ratemyprofessor.com or ask a Math major). I had an easy time with Linear, but my roommate was rocked by his. The tests were proofs (not seen before) built upon the proofs within the text (been since freshman year, so I can't give a more specific example).

applied mathematic and statistics / economics, dual major 🙂. eco degree alone would be worthless, so is the ams but i figure its better to get both regardless of how much both are worthless lol.

ratemahprofessor says nothing about him for the class during winter.

My understanding of winter and summer session is that they are easier than their school year counterpart, so you should be fine.

If it's a proof based course it could be hard. If it's not a proof based course, like at my school, it could be really easy.

Hmmm... at my school, Linear Algebra is where all the math majors change their major. I guess it varies between schools...?

very much agree with this. my linear algebra class was all proof based and was incredibly difficult but every upper division optimization/linear programming or quant econ class that actually applied linear algebra was easy.

ah yes my school is has both, but i am taking the applied one.

👍
I got a D in a proof based linear algebra class....killer. As long as you dedicate enough time the winter session should be a little easier and able to be handled

Linear was my favorite math class until I took Abstract Algebra. Mine was proof based, and learning the methods for that along with the material (if you've never done proofs before) might be a bit much. If you already have a general knowledge of proofs, or the class isn't actually proof based, then I'd say you're golden.

merry christmast every one!

ah so it seems that the general idea is that proof based class is bad, or another word, conceptual.

applied is good, more based on examples.

It's not bad, just a lot harder if you're not good at writing proofs.
