I am trying to complete my liscense application as i enter my second year of residency; however, as a DO in an allopathic residency, i do not know which boards do i send my application to. I have completed both COMLEX and USMLE step 2. The California medical board web site does not have much info on this and, of couse, no email address. Also, do i still need to take COMLEX step 3 (i prefer to be boarded by the allopathic route for increased recognition).

thnx all for the input!!!

To answer my own question in case others have it too:

I spoke with the California Med Board and it seems like they will not grant liscenses to DO's, you have to through the Osteopathic Medical board of California (916-263-3100; www.dca.ca.gov/osteopathic). To get liscensure via the Osteo Board, you of cousre need to sit for step 3 COMLEX (they do not recognize step 3 USMLE -no suprise there).

The good news: the CA Osteo Med Board is much cheaper by about $200. "Waitress, another round of beers please!!!"

Hope my question/answer helps someone out there. Good luck!

Don't forget, there is an oral exam to take before they will grant you a license here in CA. It is low stress...More of a formality than anything.......So, if you live out of state, you will have to fly here to take an oral exam before getting licensed....So much for your $200 savings....

Oral exam???? Huh? As part of Step 3? You mean after residency for the EM Boards? I don't see an orals on the CA Osteo Board's check list.

One more qustion for everyone: can i still sit for the allopathic boards if i do not take USMLE step 3 and instead just complete the COMLEX route? (remeber my residency is an allopathic)

It looks like they must have done away with this. Very cool. When I got my license here in 2002, I had to fly from CT to take an oral exam, which was required at that time....It was pretty stupid actually, more a formality. It cost a ton of money, plus flight and hotel...Not too cool on a resident salary at the time...
Well again, I stand corrected! Good luck with your application and licensure process...

bro-
i think yer confusing some issues.
first, you need to take the COMLEX, and pass it.
CA isn't one of the "five deadly states" that require a DO internship so that's not an issue for you.
After you pass step 3, you have to apply to the CA Osteopathic Medicine board (or whatever the name is).
They will grant you a CA license.

After you graduate residency, you will be taking the ABEM examination.

Q

Quimby if you are still out there, or anyone who has an answer...

HOw long did it take you to get licensed in CA (DO route). Also, did u do the electronic fingerprinting?

Thanks!
