I spent this last semester away from campus, working at a medical school. My PI ran a journal club for residents and I was invited to participate. Though I never presented myself, it was definitely an interesting and worthwhile experience. Is this something I can list on my application?

Thank you!

what did you do? how were you involved? what can you say?
It was a combination biostatistics and journal club. I was expected to have read the papers, be able to ask and answer questions, and follow the statistical concepts being outlined by those papers. I did everything that the residents did, but I didn't present my own papers.

Edit: I'm actually starting my own journal club at the main campus with this as the direct inspiration.

What would you call it? How would you name it?

It's officially called "Neurosurgery Resident Course in Evidence-based Medicine." I'll pry add "and Journal Club" to the end of it.

In what category would place the activity (from the pull-down menu)?
I'm working off my phone right now, so I don't have easy access to my application. I'm assuming that it would fit under clubs. I don't remember if that's a formal section.

It's not, though Extracurricular is. How would you feel about calling it Shadowing, since you were in the presence of residents in training?

I don't think that's accurate because it was more of a peer to peer interaction. Extracurricular would be more appropriate I think.

This title would do, but you could make it more succinct, perhaps: Neurosurgery Resident Journal Club. The evidence-based medicine aspect could be mentioned in the narrative space.

That sounds good to me! How about the quality of the EC? Do you think it's good or should it be on the chopping block if my list gets filled with other ECs. I was only involved for 5-6 months (my semester away from campus) and I won't be able to continue because of the distance.

I'll be honest: My first thought on seeing your first post was to consider this on par with listing a class like OChem among one's ECs. But between this thread and the other about a similar issue (in which you posted), I can see that you might have gotten enough out of it to write some interesting "impact and insight" comments if you choose to.

It wouldn't break my heart if you were forced to eliminate it in favor of a stronger EC.

Thank you, I appreciate your candor. I may merge this experience with the journal club that I'm in the process of getting approval for. That one may be the stronger experience considering I will be the founder and president, but since its basically a continuation of the resident club (similar format, broader topics), I may as well group them. What do you think?

Since the one led to the other, it makes the experience more substantive than a report that you simply sat and listened to others presenting. This is an "impact" and "future direction" worth commenting on. Go for it.

Thank you very much. Though in fairness, it wasn't just me sitting. I did participate, I just wasn't ever asked to present, which is fair because it wasn't really for me.
