The best thing to do is talk to faculty in the Dept at your school. They will have suggestions about which programs you're competitive for, and which ones might best serve your needs/interests. Dept chairs can put in a good word for you at many other programs (it seems that they all know eachother).
😉 A good way to narrow things down before you even talk to him/her is by eliminating places where you have no desire to live. Program websites have a lot of good info too (although many are out of date). And of course, there's
FREIDA.
Besides location, think about what you want in a program. Academic, community, university affiliated? Lots of exposure to subspecialties? A program that offers a primary care track? Opportunities to do rotations at other institutions, or abroad? Browsing program websites should help you get a feel for what programs offer, and if it might be a good fit.
It can be a difficult process (esp with IM, which has HUNDREDS of programs), but you'll figure it out.
