Does anyone have a comprehensive list of medical schools that accept biochem instead of organic chemistry II?

I know the number of medical schools doing this substitution continues to rise, but I am considering taking biochem instead of orgo 2, and I don't want to cripple myself in the process for some schools..

Thanks

You really should take both man. Technically some schools don't even have requirements any more they just want to see "demonstrated competency in science coursework" but better to err cautious

Also your best bet is to go through the MSAR requirement grid on the home pages. It should only take a quick glance for each school, like 15 minutes to look through all the schools it might make sense to apply to.

Also, at a lot of schools ( including mine) Orgo II is a pre req for Biochem. I am really confused as to how people can take Biochem instead of Orgo II.

I know a guy who took Biochem before he took orgo (1)... He regretted it very quickly.

But how do you get to D O THAT.
Also , most of the foundations for Biochem are layed during Orgo II.

The overlap is pretty heavy in a lot of subject areas, studying how an amino acid group interacts with its substrate is just applied Ochem 2. A school might design it so Bio majors learn their Ochem II as part of Biochem.

Some schools just don't have Orgo as a pre-req for biochem...
That's like not having Calc I as a pre req for Calc based physics.
I can maybe understand one semester of orgo + Biochem, but how the **** is it possible to take Biochem without orgo at all? You're so likely to bomb it lol you're school is nuts.
Like, to quote Gonnif, " It's best to reduce risk in pre med course work."
Poor judgement. :nono:
To the OP, you're much more likely to do well if you take both. I can really see waay too much going wrong if you dive into Biochem w/o Orgo II.

lool that was not at my school, they wouldn't even allow Org II as a co-requisite. And Yes, Taking Biochem before Orgo is simply a recipe for disaster.

I suppose I am in the minority here but I took biochem (where at my school it does require orgo II as a prerequisite) before orgo II. I snuck out of the requirement because I was a late premed transfer and I didn't find the course challenging at all. I am taking orgo II now because my top choice is the only school I am considering that requires it, but I find that orgo II is not necessary, but does make sense of biochemical phenomena. It is certainly not absolutely necessary if you had orgo I though. I also did very well on the biochem MCAT section so I think my lack of orgo II didn't hurt

Thanks for replies. I guess I will plan on taking orgo 2

It is at a lot of schools, but I went to my professor and asked if I could get out of the Orgo II req and he said given an A in Orgo I and one of the foundation bios, the pre req is waived. It's generally how people get past that. Or orgo II and biochem are coreqs and some people drop orgo II once classes start lol.

Ha! First semester of freshman year I signed up for biochem (this probably belongs in the stupid premed stories thread). I didn't have any issues signing up and nobody ever said I couldn't. Professor was like wtf are you doing here?! I noped out of that after the first class.

I took Biochem before Orgo 1, and I never took Orgo 2. It was fine, I got an A. Maybe it was an easy biochem class and we didn't learn as much as you guys, but I learned enough to get a 519 on the MCAT ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I think it must vary a lot school to school.
