List of schools that place greater emphasis on GPA and DAT over interpersonal skills

It's an out of area library; usually they just ship it to my local one for checkout.
 
May I ask why you are asking this. Do you feel as though your interpersonal skills are lacking?

I think if you truly feel that you may not have the necessary interpersonal skills, it is time to reconsider the profession you are going into. My friend's dad is brilliant and makes as much as a physician but is in the world of comp sci. But he does not have the patience to deal with too many people especially patients. Dentistry and medicine are careers that constantly deal with interacting with people. Shadow some physicians and dentists before you make a commitment. There might be something better out there for you.

I either go down fighting with dentistry (even if it means going for DDS/PHD) or pursue academia/research in molecular bio

Edit: ...if you're social enough to get through an interview and survive a year of clerkships. Why go into healthcare if you're self-admittedly low on interpersonal skills? You could do research or something else.

As far as social abilities:
I've won awards as best witness in high-school mock-trial at the local, regional, and state levels. Most of it is scripted but not for cross examination.
I'm soft-spoken but competent EMT.
My public speaking abilities can be very good if I practice and have a script before hand. Winging it usually ends badly.
I get good vibes at group job/volunteer interviews from the interviewer but don't always get in.

My primary motivation for dentistry is wanting to improve the overall quality of care. I've walked into more than one dental office and thought "people deserve better than this" as far as just ****ty old equipment, waiting room, etc. I feel that improving this quality is the only way to prevent corporate dentistry from taking over as it did to medicine.

Doing research or something else is much more risky and nothing is guaranteed.


All due respect but I just want OP answered. It seems that we deviate into my personal qualifications with every thread I make.

I'm not going to try and argue about your social skills or anything, but the unusual topic of the thread plus Goro calling you "automaton" kind of set the tone for me.

I don't know anything about dental school, but when it comes to med school, I don't think there's any real list of schools that would put social skills on the back burner in favor of stats, when the truth is that there are more than enough people out there who are both sociable and academically outstanding. I have heard of students with extraordinary stats who either never got into school or took several years to do it because of their interpersonal deficits. It took this one guy with a 40 MCAT three or four application cycles just to get into a mid tier state school. I'd say if you really are an automaton and still want to be a physician, learn how to be a good actor for interviews, or start showing a keen interest in pathology lol.

My advice don't get on predentl more than twice a year until you're getting ready to apply.

There are schools that place more emphasis on dat and gpa compared to other schools but interpersonal skills are a must for all schools. Your best bet is actually to apply to schools with less emphasis on dat and gpa as their average stats would be a lot lower than yours, and high stats would make it likely that you will be accepted even without a great interview. For schools that have high emphasis on dat and gpa, you will be competing with students with high stats like you as well as great interpersonal skills so you most likely won't get accepted.
 
Meh. You need to be social in almost every professional field to get promotions and succeed. That's life. So for people telling you to quit dentistry...forget them. This forum always has some dudes that say if you cant do X that well, you should consider another profession. Maybe if you don't have arms...dont go into dentistry... otherwise.. you do YOU.

I would say to practice with someone for interviews. Hire someone if need be to come off cool and collected. Practice your hypothetical answers so much that you pause and time it right so that it comes off natural. Hell, ask every single person you know to help.

I would choose a socially awkward dentist that knows their **** then a car salesman sleezy type dentist that scraped by in school. Keep trying and dont give up!
