Hi guys! Do you know where I can find a list of the scribe programs in Southern California? I know that ScribeAmerica has a program at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach because I used to volunteer in the ER there. Aside from that, are there any other programs/hospitals around that have these positions?

Hi!

I worked as an ER Scribe for over 2 years at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills and at San Clemente. Learned so much! One of the big reasons Ive gotten accepted to med schools I believe.

How'd you go about getting that gig?

Anyone know any in the LA-San Gabriel Valley area? What are the benefits or pros and cons of being a scribe versus a EMT? What's the usual payrate for scribe? This seems like a valuable experience during the gap year.

I was doing my EMT clinical hours in the ER there and I saw young college looking students with white coats following the ER docs around. I thought that was a little odd so I asked one of them and they told me that they were scribes. I asked them who I can contact, and they gave me the contact info for the doc in charge of the program. I've already left the program, but if you wanted to know the doc in charge its Dr. Eric Siedenburg at SMMC in Laguna Hills, CA. Its quite competitive requiring but its a goldmine experience. Good luck!!

I worked for 2 years at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, CA. I worked ~16 hrs/wk, paid at $11/hr. As a scribe, you are in charge of all of the patient documentation. For every patient that comes to the ER, you tag along with the ER doc assigned to that patient and you transcribe the history, physical exam, review of systems, are in charge of keeping track of lab values, radiological exam interpretations, discharge and admission notes, discharge prescriptions. You basically gain in depth knowledge of what its like to be a doc...you get inside the head of a doc. Its quite amazing! Every med school I interviewed at was amazed by my scribe experience. Make sure you do something else to gain some more patient contact as well though prior to applying to med schools, such as hospital volunteering.
