Hi,

I am filling out my research experience in AMCAS but I am a little bit confused about listing ongoing research.

I am currently working on a research project with a cancer research. However, we are still at the early stages of the research (Specifically, we have IRB approval and currently working to sort out data from a national database). I am working on exporting the data and sorting them in a meaningful manner.

- Should I include this as a research experience?
- How should I list the hours and the dates, since we are still working on it?

Another concern I have is about a research class I took before and whether I can list it as a research experience. So I am a biology major and I am required to take a capstone class. The objective of the class is to work with my group to design an experiment (has to be finished in 1 semester), write a manuscript, and design a poster to be presented on campus. The experiment was done after the department approval and under the supervision of our instructor.

- Should this be listed as a research experience?

I really appreciate your help.

Both sound like research to me!

IMO the first one would probably merit its own AMCAS entry. I had a similar-ish situation. You can use the "repeated" option to put actual dates/hours before June 2017 (or whenever you submit) and then project how many hours you'll be working on this from July 2017 (or after whenever you submit) to August 2018 (when you'll start med school)

You can explain in the 700 char the overall project goal, what you've done already, and what you'll be responsible for and anticipate doing in the upcoming year.

Good luck!

I had a class similar to that and I didn't include it as experience....in my opinion I feel like someone would view that as "fluff" but if you have nothing else maybe put it. How long have you been with the current research? If its like less than a month I would save it for an update, but if you legit have no other research then I would put it on

Thanks for the advice. I am definitely doing that.

I've been in my current research for about 4 months. However, my "actual" work in it is way less than that because I had to wait for the professor to finish his previous project.
TBH, I applied last cycle and I did not include the class as an experience. But, now when I think about it, I feel like it should be included.
