Being as early in the process as I am, the anonymity of the forum lets you residents and attendings have much more candid/open dialogue about the field. It's also filled with people who are willing and able to answer a question - another thing that's generally unavailable elsewhere for premeds.

I appreciate the even-handed moderating. I've found the forum to be a great source of information and a comfortable place to talk about sometimes uncomfortable topics in psychiatry.

It was enjoyable to talk about it. Amazing how many folks weren't even aware of SDN's existence. One very kind "lurker" came up to say hello and express appreciation. We also did our best to attempt to recruit new members, including a PD.

One thing I realized was that just as I started for the fun of it, I continue because it's fun too. Explaining to poster visitors how little we actually DO as moderators reminds me that it's really all about what ALL of you bring to the forum that keeps it enjoyable! So thank YOU too!

This was at the Pasadena Westin - the annual meeting of the Association for Academic Psychiatry (next year's meeting is Scottsdale, AZ Sept 21-24).

I thoroughly enjoyed finally meeting OPD after all these years and catching up with the friends that I've made through AAP (including a list of luminaries from around the country that have helped move my career along in various ways).

In terms of the poster - it was nice to meet folks who have known me only as DS in person, and it was fun to educate the AAP membership about what we do (especially watching their eyes get wide as they thread-searched for the name of their own institution on OPD's laptop). Echoing OPD's sentiments - discussing what we do with others was a nice reminder of all the things that have kept us coming back to SDN day after day for >5 years - namely chatting with all of you.

Have you guys gathered any data regarding how many residents/young psychiatrists go to this site?

There are other sites such as sermo and scutwork. How do they factor in?

I haven't been to aadprt in a while but you are right, it is a nice atmosphere even though they try to steer you towards academia.
