Disclaimer: This is NOT a request for medical advice.

Recently, one of my relatives was diagnosed with cancer. More recently, he was diagnosed with some sort of liver obstruction secondary to either the chemo or cancer, and he was told there was nothing he could do. They tried a stent, but it did not work. Since my mother (who relays me this information) is not exactly a health care professional, she did not remember the exact condition. What would the name of this condition be? Would it be cholestasis, or something else?

it could be some kind of portal vein obstruction

 The portal vein is behind the liver...this would not cause hepatic obstruction.

We would need more info. The obstruction could be related to the cancer itself (solid tumor vs. blood) or the therapy as you stated.
