my general understanding concerning pale vs hem. infarcts is that >1 blood supply = hemorrhagic infact (eg lung, GI)

so, my question is why a liver would have a pale infarct...(btw, i do realize that liver infarcts are rare...this was a webpath q.)

hmmm not sure if i'm missing some major fundamental point or if the liver is some exception...or if i'm over-analyzing this whole thing....hard to tell these days... 😕

thanks for any insight

Liver has two sources of blood. You would have to occlude them both before you would get an infarction of the liver.

right, so if the liver did, in fact, infarct wouldn't it be hemorragic? webpath says that liver infarcts are generally anemic...i was under the impression that only organs w/ 1 blood supply get anemic infarcts...you catch my drift?

maybe things will be clearer in the morning...at this point i dont really care what the #@$@# liver does... 🙂

😴

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, as this is coming from the part of my brain dealing with 2-year old anatomy, but the left lobe of the liver is fed by the left hepatic artery and the right lobe, quadrate lobe, and caudate lobe are fed by the right hepatic artery. So I guess it wouldn't be stretching it to imagine a left hepatic artery occlusion causing a pale infarct in the left lobe.

That is correct, but it can also survive off the portal vien, so there isn't enough hypoxia.

hey Jalby,
Why r u still reading FA? Looking up questions? I did this and depressed myself..had to stop.

I wasn't looking up the questions 🙂

I guess just keeping it fresh then. 😉

Any of you guys start reading for 3rd year yet? I start with medicine and I was thinking of getting FA for Medicine or FA for the Wards. Any suggestions?

I have medicine first, then pediatrics, then surgery, then winter break. I bought Prescription for the Boards (as a general overview) and Blueprints in Pediatrics. One of these days I'll probably go pick up the Lawrence surgery book and Surgical Recall (what a weird format, by the way). I was going to pick up First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship, but they're so out of date! I think the last edition was 2001 or something like that. Someone help me out here because I can't remember, is the most recent First Aid for Medicine book an orange or blue color? One's old and one's really old.

I got a similar schedule for the 1st few clerkships -- med, peds, ob/gyn then winter break cardiology, family, surg, neuro/neurosurg/optho I heard FA medicine was decent. Some of my more "studious" friends are planning on reading/memorizing harison's 😱

I have Surg, Ob/Gyn, Peds than break. I baught Lawrence and have read 10 pages now. I also have to move during the middle of surgery, so I want to have a sig chunk of reading done, cause it's going to be a b!tch.

I take it Harrison's is the Lawrence's Essentials of Surgery of Internal Medicine?

What's your take so far? Is the reading pretty fast or is slow and thick?

AFAIK, pale and hemorragic infarcts depends on the tissue density. If the tissue is loose like in lungs you have a hemorrhagic infarct. Liver tissue is dense and so it would be pale infarct.

First two chapters are boring. It will get better in chapter 6 once I start getting to the surgeries.
