Just out of curiosity, about how much do you all have in loans? I just had to take out a fairly large loan, from a fairly crappy company, so that puts me at about 40,000 for my whole undergraduate, and a semester of graduate work. My family is giving me such crap about it too, they think i'm wasting too much money. I told them later in life this all won't matter, but it does hurt now...🙁 Plus, after D school, i'll be really in the hole, but it all has a purpose...

I've got about $50K, which included one year of professional school that I decided was not for me, financed on loans. I'll be starting in the hole already, but like you said, it is for the greater good. I made my mistakes, took my lumps, and have learned A LOT about life. I won't make those mistakes again, and financing my dental education will now be a breeze b/c of my experience when many others are "freaking out". Hopefully I'll be able to help those people stay calm and realize it's OK!🙂 You're fine if you just remember to try not to live like a dentist until you are one🙂

0$, scholarships rule!

I am about the same...but don't let your family get you down...your signature is on the papers, not theirs, right. Besides, if it is so troublesome to them, why don't they float some Jacksons your way?🙂

I agree with Lemming, try not to live like a dentist 'til you are one.

Oh, and as far as financing other ventures like a mortgage, a dental practice and/or vehicle...loan officers don't spazz about your student loans...they DO spazz if you have multiple credit card debt, though. It's all in your FICO score...but that's another thread.

about $60,000 so far for undergrad 🙁

I took this much in loans for my whole undergraduate studies, $7,550. And I am graduating after in two months.
Anticipated loan for dental school: ~ $140,000 - $160,000 That is a lot of money, but as you gusy said it is for a good purpose.

Biology 101 textbook....$125.00

Mac Powerbook...$1700.00

Spring Break in Mexico...$2800.00

Total Undergraduate loans...$40,000.00

Total D School loans...$160,000.00

DDS or DMD behind your name...PRICELESS

😀

I'm about three million in debt...but since I'll probably make 1.5-2.0 mil my first year out as a dentist I'm not very worried. Do you think that this is a realistic goal?

0,thanks to my 790 SAT 1 verbal score and my parents generousity👍

lucky for you that the SAT doesn't test spelling. (generosity)

maybe it'll be here for the next cycle

i have a friend w/ $60 k in debt and all he got was an art degree from a really expensive school. he makes less than $30k a year now. i think if in the end your debt is roughly the same as one year of your anticipated income then you're fine. when it becomes twice or three times your anticipated income then i think you have a problem beginning to brew.
right now i'm at $25 k for undergrad. i'm hoping to stay under $200 k w/ D school included.

anybody else plan on using some loan money to take trips right before d-school? i was thinking of visiting NY and china over the summer.

I took out 40k just to cover the first semester of school here. 😛

None for me! Yay for staying in state for undergrad with scholarships. But boo for staying in the same state for 22 years of your life.

One of the nice thing about being poor, married, and have children is you get alot of grants/ scholarships. I received 9K+ this year alone in grants, I still am am about 30K in debt, plus the 30K in my wifes school debt. A family member who is a dentist told me to borrow as much as I can to make my family comfortable, cause it won't be a problem paying it back.

do you think that you get more married and poor, than you would single and poor? because believe me, i'm single and poor, i actually received a few grants my first few years of undergrad because my parents were considered low income. i'm just wondering if getting married before instead of after D school is better financially...not that you should really think of that when marrying, but you know what i mean.

I have about 15,000 in Undergrad debt, but I don't feel too bad about it after I think about the 160-200k Im about to fork over for d-school.

$0 undergrad
~$115K DDS
~$55K ortho

Worked thru school for the past couple years and paid it all back. Woohoo...
unfortunately my grades suffered a bit.
