Calling Sallie Mae today I was told that when I start my predoc internship I will need to fill out the "unemployment deferment request form" if I want to defer my loans during this upcoming internship year. Is this correct? Its just seems weird to me that they dont have a specific "internship/residencey deferment request form" because..well..im not really gonna be unemployed, right?

What did others do (or fill out) to defer their loans during this year of slave wages?

My understanding is that while on internship you are still enrolled as a doctoral student and you should not be required to do this. I have never run across anyone who has to do this during the predoctoral internship.

oh. So i can just leave it as "in school deferment," correct? I just thought id have to switch it to some other deferment reason/program since one is working full time and being paid on the intership year?

This. You're still a full-time student during your internship year and will need to register for a course that provides the equivalent credits through your university. Some programs even charge students tuition to go on internship, though this is (hopefully) rare considering the school isn't providing a service in return for that money.

cool, thanks. That saves a headache of paperwork

I wish. If you're registered for credits, you're paying here (and we are required to register for internship).

That's too bad. Hopefully they at least reduce the credits you are paying for? My program has managed to work it out with the registrar so that it's not a problem to register for a 0 credit course that still qualifies as "full-time." We do this for internship and dissertation continuation.

my school will have reduced (drastically) rate for tuition for internship year. if i am lucky enough to be matched in state i will make sure i make the most of it by still using the facilities lol

👍

Yeah....very reduced. Thank God for us. I had interviewed at another PsyD program that has the nerve to charge full tuition (and it is a very high tuition) for that year. And no, it is not a professional school. It is a program housed in a University. I said hell...no......

Seems like it varies fairly significantly from program to program. Our university charges full tuition when signed up for internship hours, but will waive a significant portion of it (all but the last credit hour or so). Pretty sure the fees are still the same, though, which stinks, considering I won't even be in the same state.

Once we had enough credits and dissertation hours, my university only required that you be registered for hours the semester you defended. Because I defended *before* internship, I didn't actually have to register as a student at all while I was on internship. So this was an issue for student loans. I ultimately took my 6 month grace period, and then filed for forbearance for the remainder of internship. When postdoc started, I was immediately on the hook.

Luckily, I was awarded an NIH Loan Repayment award that went into effect a few months into my postdoc. And once that kicked in, NIH was paying more than my monthly payments so I didn't have to actively make any payments while on postdoc (though I still owed a percentage of the total, as per the LRP guidelines).

So it really can be idiosyncratic to your university's policy - though it sounds like most places make you register as a student while on internship, and it will be a moot point!

Be careful with the credits..........in my program, if disseratation is done, we only have to enroll in 3 units of credit. That is not considered "full-time" and not eligible for loans. I am not sure how that would impact loan repayment, though
