Hello everyone, I will be starting my first year of college this fall and am able to afford my tuition(with the help of stafford loans) but will not be able to afford cost of living. Unfortunately I do not qualify for "independent" status even though I really am..... Are there any loan programs or lenders that offer help with living expenses while attending college? I will need a long term loan as I plan to also go to medical school. A safe estimate would be that I need $4,000 my first year and the following years I will most likely need less if any at all since I will be situated better by then.

Thanks!

$4000 for all your living expenses for a year? Wow, that's a stringent budget? 😱

I will be working also but I wont be able to work full time during school and still get good grades! 😱

Also planning on having a roommate

Try an alternative private loan.

Thanks for the response. I dont really have a credit record yet as I'm just 18 and may not have a co-signer. Is it possible to get alternative loans with little credit history for an Undergrad? Also I was under the impression most alternative loans will only cover the gap between how much I will need for education cost and how much I have to put torwards it. I did not think most alternative loan lenders would loan money for undergrad living expenses?(It's not a campus)

Thanks

If you are really doing it "on your own" you should be able to appeal your dependent status and get it changed to independent. Most schools have provisions for this change. Talk to your financial aid department about your situation, they will be in the best position to offer advice.

What are the stipulations for doing this? I really want to be classified as independent b/c I would be able to get more Stafford, but my parents list me as dependent on their tax return. Would I be able to be classified as independent for school purposes?
