I'm starting medical school in the fall and trying to find a private loan ahead of time to consolidate roughly $8,000 of debt. I'm hoping to find a loan similar to Bank of America's Education Maximizer loan that I can avoid paying off until after graduation and that doesn't require school certification so that funds are not subtracted from the budget set by the school. (I'll need all of the funds included in the budget) However, the problem with this loan is that it requires a co-signer. Anyone able to secure a loan prior to starting school that doesn't require a cosignature and that one can avoid paying on until after graduation? Thank you.

Hi pkid,

I list a few options at my blog, including the BofA Education Maximier. In general, any loan above your certified education budget will be credit dependent. They might not all require a co-signer if you have credit history yourself... but if you do not, then there's a very good chance they will either reject you, or charge you obscene rates. The two I list on my site include Chase's Education One, and Sallie Mae's Tuition Answer. Tuition Answer has the best rate, but rates are still higher.

For med students that need to borrow above the education budget, but aren't considered "credit-worthy", there really aren't any great solutions.

Prosper can be used to consolidate your $8k in debt into a fixed-rate 3-year installment payment (even without cosigner), but it doesn't help you defer.
