I was just wondering if any one is offering to pay off student loans as part of their contract post residency? My friend just got out of Pharmacy school and his contract included that they would pay off his student loans and I think that's a pretty sweet deal.

You're not kidding. I've heard of this type of loan forgiveness happening for some family practice docs too. It will be interesting to see if anyone does it for podiatric medicine. 👍

I have not heard of this for podiatry. While pods are in high demand, I do not think it is "that" high of a demand.

Actually, my hospital is paying off a percentage of my student loans. It was part of the contract that I had negotiated with the hospital and my Podiatry group. To my knowledge, there are no national organization that would help pay off Podiatry school loans in return for service. The only exception would be the National Indian Health Services. Majority of the people that have part of the student loans paid off are usually result of the negotiation of their contract with their employer.

can you share how you convinced them to help pay off some of the loans and how much of the loans thye agreed to pay? Why is it beneficial to the hospital to pay the loans as opposed to just giving you more money?

You can join the forces also. The APMA News awhile back discussed how loan repayment for joining the military.

Also, I'm sure that this could be negotiated into your contract, but I would guess that you would rather have the salary.

Sam, I actually have an Income Guarantee contract with the hospital. The purpose of an Income Guarantee contract is a tool of the hospital to recruit practictioners for the hospital. Hence, convincing the hospital to include student loan payoff in my income guarantee contract was not difficult since they were interested in recruiting me to join staff at the hospital.
