I will be attending Temple starting Fall 2006. I briefly tried looking through other threads about financial aid related issues. I got a letter saying that Temple is giving me 38 K (loans of course via Stafford) However, when I talked to the fin aid counselor, he quoted the typical budget to be about 64 K. Therefore, the remainder of my expenses have to be paid for via an alternative loan program. What sort of alternative loan programs do you all use?

Private loans. Most lenders for Stafford loans also have private loan programs specifically for med students.

thank you for your replies

Ask your school about a Perkins loan.

Don't Perkins loans usually have more criteria than Staffords? I was under the impression that the terms were better. Could be wrong about that.

Yes. The school pays the interest for you while you are enrolled. Everyone who is out of state gets them at my school.

What do people do in this situation....

Say you have enough Stafford sub/unsub to just cover your educational expenses plus the living costs allowed by the student budget outlined by your school's fin aid department. What if you need a little more or just simply want some more? This could be to cover some unexpected costs or just so you don't have to eat Spam sandwiches just to make ends meet.

I have heard of Bank of America private loans but have not done a ton of research and was hoping to get some good advice from others. Credit cards also seem like a no win situation.
(for the sake of argument I'm thinking something like $2000-5000 -- somewhere in that general range).
thanks

I was allowed to take out a bigger Stafford loan. (I'm not big on the spam.)
